rock climbing/sailing

where does the sailing team sail? (what body of water)
and is there a rock climbing facility nearby?

There are a few lakes (read:ponds) in which to sail - I think they use Black Moshannon and Poe Paddy for practice, and go to places like Lake Raystown (sp?) for local competitions. I could be wrong, its been a while since I talked to any of those guys.

Rock climbing? There are a few climbing walls nearby, but the only one I can name is the local YMCA. Most of the real climbing in the area is bouldering - central PA is not known for cliffs.

i see. how local are those lakes (ponds? i can’t tell because of the smiley lol)?

and are those rock climbing facilities local as well?

(local as in walking/bus ride away)

The Y is about 2 miles off-campus, accessible by bike or bus. I think you would need a car to get out to the local “ponds”.

Yeah, I meant ponds… not sure how that became a smiley.

The bus lines spread out pretty well, and the Y is definitely on one of the routes, but be warned that only the on-campus buses are free. You definitely need a car (or a car-owning friend) to get to any body of water - the ones with which I am familiar are from 20-45 minutes from campus.

Rock climbing at the State College YMCA is free for members, $5 for non members or $3 for Penn State outing club members. Harness and climbing shoes included if you don’t have your own. Nearest outdoor climbing is about 45 minutes by car from State College, easily top roped, limited trad, no sport routes. Climbs are 40 to 60 feet vertical.
