So I’m considering applying to Roosevelt University for a major in theater and was looking at their admissions requirements. For their performing arts department, it says that the school requires three letters of recommendation. So, my question is, are these letters specifically from artistic teachers or are they from academic teachers as well? I’ve already applied to various schools and wanted to add this one on and already have 2 academic teacher letters and one artistic. Thanks!

I’d say they’d prefer artistic recommendations, but would probably accept letters from teachers in related fields (e.g. English). The requirement is specific to CCPA, not general admissions for Roosevelt, and so I inferred that they would like it to focus on performing arts. I would suggest that you ask your academic teachers or advisers to discuss your performing background, talent, and enthusiasm, if you don’t have any additional teachers, directors, or mentors you can ask for recommendations (many high school students do not). CCPA requires candidates to submit Roosevelt applications, but Roosevelt is not very selective academically. Our admissions representative stated that no serious applicant for CCPA would have any trouble getting into Roosevelt. I think that Roosevelt only requires recommendation from adviser or college counselor, so the three letters should all pertain to your interest in CCPA. I don’t think you should sweat this too much, though, because I believe that CCPA overwhelmingly bases its decisions on auditions.

Well my one artistic obviously focuses on my skills as an actor. The one academic focuses on my balance of school and my pre college theater program and my devotion to the craft. The last letter focuses more on me as a student. Since two are artistically based can I just send these three?

I don’t see why not, but I’m not an authority. I recommend asking your adviser, or checking with a CCPA admissions officer.

I’m planning on transferring to CCPA. They are looking to receive 2 artistic letters, and one academic letter. I called and asked. so yeah, Break a leg!

Hey guys! I’m a work study student in the CCPA admissions office. The letters can be either artistic or academic. All we ask is that the people who write the letters know you well. Let me know if you guys have any questions. I’m an MT major, but we take a ton of our classes with the Acting majors and my roommate is an acting major, so I can definitely get answers for you! Break a leg!
