my school doesn’t have a team, but i want to get involved in college. how can i get into the sport/physically prepare so i’d be ready and relatively competitive? any rowers/crew members? (is that even what you call them?)

There are private rowing clubs out there. Also, I don’t know what height you are but most competitive rowers are 6 foot or above at the college level, at least for heavyweight crew. Just something to take into consideration. A girl I know is rowing at college next year and is 6’4".

hmm, i’m about 5’7" and 140- I used to play soccer

There’s a lightweight division in crew, but being tall with long arms helps a lot. If there’s a club nearby, try doing a week of crew camp in the summer and see how you like it.

Crew requires endurance, strength, and speed, so doing a combination of weightlifting and serious aerobic exercise is a good idea. If you have access to a good rowing machine, try it, but get somebody who knows something about it to show you, there’s a trick to it.
