RSI 2006 Introductions

Of course. But chocolate is more fun :)

To follow up on an earlier question: is a bike a good idea if we’re not working in an MIT lab? I, like ZFrankel, will be at BU.

I got mailed 2day by my mentor. His name is Aaron Tievsky.
Anybody knows anything abt him?

I don’t know about a bike, but they’ll give you money to ride the bus or T to get to work.

Yes–a bike is probably helpful, but I haven’t heard of anyone bringing one because it’s a bit of a hassle unless you live very close to MIT. RSI definitely does not expect you to worry about transportation–they’ll make sure you have plenty of money to take the T and also eat off-campus. I would recommend strongly against worrying :)

Well guys, it seems to be getting closer every day(most likely because it is in fact getting closer every day). I am really looking forward to going and can’t wait to meet all of you. Also, thank you Rickoids of the past for your guidance and advice on all of the details that we seem to have been stressing over. To be honest, I think we invented a lot of them just so we had an excuse to put something on the RSI forum other than “omg I can’t wait to go!” but despite the fact that this may have been akin to psychological malingering you guys have eased a lot of my worries, and I assume the worries of others. 7 days.

“omg I can’t wait to go!”

Pierce, the quotation marks really detract from the otherwise clear enthusiasm of your post. j/k

Quotation marks are an odd fad these days. I’ve even seen them on signs at a climbing gym, things like “Rock climbing is dangerous!” Perhaps they figure that if they pretend it’s a piece of Great Wisdom and that they just forgot the “-Jesus” or “-Martin Luther King” or “-the owner, who’s worried you’ll break your neck and sue him,” you’ll really believe them.

ZFrankel—Paul Pierce isn’t my actual name, just favorite bball player. BTW the quotes weren’t intentional.

Palak-- I was referring to you earlier as pierce for lack of an actual name. I assumed that you’re name was not actually paul pierce as while I am not a huge fan of the NBA I have always enjoyed NCAA and have a very vague memory of his being really good on the Jayhawks(sorry if I’m mistaken, again the memory is very vague, like 2nd or 3rd grade time). Also I think he was the guy who got stabbed in the face a while back, correct me if I’m wrong. As for the comment on the quotes: it was more of a perfunctory effort to be funny than an actual commentary on your rather funny post. Looking forward to meeting you at RSI, where hopefully I’ll have better success with research than I do with humor.

Hey everyone, by this time next week we’ll all be at RSI!
My mentor contacted me a few days ago; he’s from Harvard - anybody working there as well?

woah corina, guess we’ll be spending a lot of time together commuting to Harvard…and that’s not a bad thing what so ever. Btw, I had a conversation with a friend about my plans for the summer yesterday and it went something like this:

Him: What are your plans for the summer?
Me: I’m going to a summer camp.
Him: What kind?
Me: Research
Him: smirks you’re spending your summer holed up in a lab, have fun. Where is it?
Me: MIT
Him: Wow, what are you going to be doing?
Me: Working with a prof from harvard on bioinformatics research
Him: silence Harvard, that’s pretty awesome

I can’t wait to meet you guys. The day is coming closer and closer!!!
What type of attire is appropriate for the lab? I usually dressed pretty casual, whatever i wore to school, when I worked in the lab, but I’m not sure if that’s the norm at RSI.

This was sort of covered before, but if we bring a laptop, will there be ethernet ports to connect to? For past Rickoids who brought a laptop, was it useful at all given that you had Athena cluster access?

Do we actually have to bring rain gear as mentioned in the student handbook?
I thought the weather is hot in Cambridge

Vanilea–yes, I did win a trip to Taiwan. It will be extremely awesome!!! It is next February–still a ways to go.

BTW, your conversation with your friend was AWESOME. OMG, I laughed when I read it.

i can’t believe how soon RSI is…

The weather is hot, yes, but often rainy. There are generally some fun thunderstorms, so rain gear is useful if you and/or your paper don’t want to end up soaked =) (Or, of course, you can just rely on the Naked Boxer Run method of not getting stuff wet. This probably works better for guys.)

ill arrive to boston on june 25th.
Are u all guys gonna b there by June 24th(i couldnt make it to arrive on the 24th)

i’ve been in the boston area since yesterday. my parents wanted to come and see me off, not to mention visit other colleges in the area and see some relatives on my mom’s side of the family. i’m not going to RSI until one o’clock on sunday. man, i’m excited.

i thought we were all suppose to arrive on the 25th? Who is arriving there on the 24th?
