RSI 2006 Introductions

muhahaha! i got a 222 on the psat! and i still got in! can anyone else beat that?

Am I the only one who would either have to take a red eye or arrive at about 5pm (the more likely option)?

I’ll be arriving at 10:50a.m. or so I think. But yeah, I have to get on the plane at 7 something, which is early(I am not a morning person).

I think I’m the only one from MA, so I guess I’ll take the T and beat everyone’s arrival. BTW the T is pretty fun to ride on, especially since Harvard sq. is right after Kendall/MIT, and Kendall/MIT connects directly to Charles MGH so there’s a nice view.

Yes–the T is awesome. (I moved here from NJ a few years ago, so I’m perhaps a bit overenthusiastic about public transportation, but it’s pretty cool that for $1.25 you can ride around in circles all day long.)

haha rahrah I beat you by one point. I got a 221. But on the actual SAT I only got a 2100 =/

does anyone else not have a clue how they got into RSI?

Yes… given the conversations the first few days of RSI last year, not having a clue how you got in actually seems to be selected for. Don’t worry, the admissions people don’t mess up. Much ;)

Sorry I’m coming in late. I just found the site a couple of days ago.

Name: Kenneth

State: Utah

GPA/rank: 4.0 (my school doesn’t adjust for AP/honors classes) 1/402

SAT: 36 ACT, 1580 SAT, 238 PSAT, 5 SAT II’s all 800’s

AP’s: Calculus BC (5) French (5) US History (5) Biology (5)
This year: Spanish, English, German, Chemistry, US Government

Extracurriculars/Offices: Skiing, Acapella & Madrigal Choirs, Scuba, Swimming, Chess, German & English native speaker and can speak Spanish and French fluently, I’ve taken a little bit of Latin

Fields/Subfields of research: Chemistry, Organic

Research experience: Mentorship/Lab Assistant with Organic Chemistry professor at Brigham Young University. Researched the total synthesis of resveratrol, found in grape skings (really boring I know)

Why you think got you in: I’ve spent quite a bit of time living abroad both with my family and with host families. Test scores and my research experience. I’m also a pretty good essay writer which is a really practical skill when your trying to appear smarter than you really are.

Polictical leanings: I consider myself liberal. But since I come from the reddest of red states (Utah voted almost 70% Bush in 2000) I have no idea what that means compared with everyone else. I’m not sure about embryonic stem-cell research. As long as their is an alternative to using an embryo however I think that should be used.

My more normal self: I love meeting new people, a good laugh, a stimulating conversation. I’m deeply religious. I’m a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (some people call us Mormons for short). I’m such a skiing addict, I like winter more than summer. I enjoy programming more than gaming, but it’s more of a hobby than a passion. I want to go to medical school and get an MD/PhD and then become a medical researcher. Mexican food is my favorite. Unlike the rest of you who are probably all-around geniuses my school accomplishments are probably my brain’s attempt to compensate for a severely underfounded common sense department. Leave it to me to cut open my mom’s couch at 5 years old to try and find out what’s inside.

I’ve noticed a correlation with winning at ISEF as a freshmen/sophomore and RSI. I’m guessing a mixture of high stats, courseload and research experience (mainly awards won) + essays are the main components of getting in.

Is it a good idea to bring a bicycle to RSI? What about personal computer? Could one survive without personal computers as I am sure MIT has plenty of it everywhere?

I would say that ISEF is more important than PSAT scores. My PSAT scores were not perfect (226) and my test scores were ok (not like perfect 800’s across the board), but my research experience and going to ISEF probably made me stand out a bit. Because if you look at the number of freshman and sophmores that make it to ISEF each year, it’s pretty low. i also think its true that they accept you based on passion and interest as well, if you really love science…then that’s a plus!
I’m leaving at 5 pm too Corina!!! yeah for late leavers! btw, this is a bit of a rate, but i have to go to prom the day i come back form ISEF which totally sucks.
ppierce, what is the weather like in Massachuets? I was just wondering so I would decide what kind of clothes to bring.

kennyb, i lack common sense as well…I had to give up something because it wouldn’t have been fair to the human population for me to be endowed with stunning looks, intelligence, and common sense as well…i think 2 out of 3 is good enough.

Well, you both probably outclass me in other areas, but my main sacrifice toward the self-esteem of humanity is any reasonable form of social skills. (Do not let my online gregariousness fool you! Only in anonimity can I be foward.) Also, my spelling stinks. (Aninimity? ananimity?)

anonymity
It’s because schools quit teaching phonics!

Wellll, as long as people are admitting their imperfections, I must say I’m really clumsy…that’s all, though ;). Vanilea, awesome I’m already thinking about how hard it must be to leave =( !

So is anything due tomorrow? I think that survey thing (naming newspapers and congressmen) is due, but on the attachment it says May 16th…?

I actually forgot about that survey thing until yesterday. I mailed it today but I doubt it will make it to McLean by tomorrow.

oh, and corinao, I’m pretty clumsy too, ha. I leave at noon on August 5th (i think). You guys get to spend 5 more hours in Boston than I do…

highskoolstudent, I think it just has to be postmarked on the 5th :). Aww, why do you leave so late? Where are you from?

are you guys attaching a paper specifying additional research interests?

Also, the field that i put as a second choice is actually listed as my primary interest; that’s intentional right?

Logicus, I have the same problem!!! (my 2nd field is listed as 1st). Are you contacting them…? I mean, I don’t mind that much, but I just hope it isn’t a mistake.
