Rutgers Honors College 2020

@MirloBeach Thank you for your comment. I checked the portal and I unfortunately did not get into any Honors Program/ College which does make me slightly sad, but I realize that I can only try and make the best of my situation. I’m sure I’ll find my group. Congrats to your son!!

@maggiedonlevie
Thank you sooo much for your comment. I was having a really bad day and I realized that getting denied to HC isn’t the end of the world. I think I was stuck in a toxic mindset where I believed that getting accepted to HC determines if I “succeeded” in high school. But now , I realize that I am literally beginning my journey and I have so many opportunities to look forward too. I am done drowning in self pity lol. You’re right, I have a strong work ethic and honestly, I think I have the drive to do well in college. So thank you !

Congrats to all that got in.S16 did not get in to honors college and not a good feeling. It was probably the only way he would have gone to Rutgers at this point.

So, we got a call from Rutgers yesterday but they did not leave any vmail.
Anyone else with the same story?

Don’t be so hard on yourself. I agree with the above reply that one decision does not define you. You have your whole life ahead of yourself, and you will meet all sorts of people at college and have great experiences. It was really the best time of my life and I had friends from all different backgrounds, I was probably the most academically focused and it didn’t bother me at all. And as a side note, my son (20) goes to NJIT and he was kind of a slacker in HS, he did well but could have done so much better. He is going to be doing a second internship for software engineering with Facebook in silicon valley, which is the highest paid internship out there. People will surprise you! Don’t let this get you down!

I am trying to understand why my DS has two colleges on his portal? Were all students made to choose a second major?
So, he received Honors program from the second college - one he has no intention of attending or majoring in.
Any recourse with that?

I have a question about the Honors Program and I’m not sure if anyone rly knows this. Unfortunately, I wasn’t offered HP or HC for the business school, my first choice. I heard that freshmen can try to opt for Honors Program again during the first year. Is this true? And does anyone know how difficult it is to make it if it’s true? I know that it isn’t the end of the world but I still want to try and go for it while I can.

@akhilpnbc https://www.sashonors.rutgers.edu/admissions/high-school-students you can only apply to sas honors program and you can apply before March 15 this year to be reconsidered at the link provided but RBS only offers honors through invitation for both program and college

So we did an accepted students tour today, and in the SOE info session a parent asked about Honors College. The associate dean there stated that if you didn’t get the invitation that you wouldn’t be getting one.
However, an Admissions person said emails would come out next week, and then one of the profs leading a lab tour said his son had not heard, but he was confident he would he admitted to Honors.
Anyway, the tour was great and the student ambassadors had great demeanors and were all well-spoken. Not all were part of honors yet all spoke of great experiences in research, internships etc during their time at Rutgers.
Overall, it left my son & I impressed with the school.
If he receives any merit, he’d probably pick Rutgers. But since NJIT has already offered merit, it makes the choice easy to pick NJIT over Rutgers.

My D17 got her merit scholarship package on Jan 20. It seems the merit offer is delayed by almost a month in 3 years time frame.

@destinedfordestitute you’re not alone!! RBS HC was my dream school and I didn’t get in to HC (for any of the 3 schools I applied to) with a 1580 SAT and a strong application all around… I made a lot of sacrifices throughout HS but my school is so competitive that I look like nothing compared to a lot of my classmates, many of whom are rich enough to apply to 25+ schools and applied to Rutgers with no intention of going, who got into HC instead of me. This news honestly made me feel so depressed because I worked really hard for this and the merit aid it would’ve guaranteed would’ve been a huge help to my family. I’m trying to remember that things happen for a reason but it’s rough…

If admitted HC students decide not to go to Rutgers, will Rutgers give those open spots to deserving, interested students like @kitkat57 ?

@coolmom101 unfortunately no as HC is invitation only. They purposely send more invitations than students who can attend knowing that some people decide not to go to rutgers.

DS got honors college but what keeps me up at night is that they need to maintain a 3.5gpa in SAS or 3.25 is SOE to keep renew the scholarship for each of the 4 years. Now in a perfect world, everyone thinks their child will be able to maintain it after all their child is an HONORS student but its not easy in college to get an A grade especially in engineering or science classes. If the scholarship is not renewed then Rutgers tuiton for OOS will be a hardship. Other colleges have 4 year scholarships without a high minimum GPA threshold while they are in college. What is everybody else’s thoughts regarding this? Is the risk acceptable?

Is it only the presidential has the 3.5 gpa requirement? 3.5 is on the high end for sure.

@borgdoctor For SAS you need a 3.25 first semester and a 3.5 every semester after. For SOE, she needs a 3.25 every semester (which is very easy to obtain even with engineering classes, I failed my class and still got above a 3.25). However, if your daughter gets a presidential scholarship she needs to maintain a 3.5 which is difficult to do in the engineering school. Outside of engineering school it is very manageable. I have a presidential scholarship in SOE and idk if I will be able to maintain it

@Tictacmissus thanks for clarifying that you need a 3.5 for presidential scholarship in engineering school. That’s definitely difficult. My DS is going into the engineering school so definitely something to think about. Curiously enough, the GPA requirements for the merit scholarships were lower in past years for example it use to be only a 3.0 GPA requirement to maintain merit aid. It almost feels like Rutgers is trying to reel people in dangling a carrot of lots of merit aid knowing that a certain number won’t be able to maintain it and then will pay more tuition in later years. College is a business after all…don’t ever forget that and be lulled by all the pretty dorms and such…

@borgdoctor I wouldn’t worry about it until you find out if you get presidential scholarship or not. Only top 1-2% get the scholarship the vast majority of the honors college only gets $10k-$22k and that means in engineering they only need a 3.25 (which is much easier to maintain)

Are you an international student ?
Coz my son has almost same STATS but did not get into HC or HP
