My son got in honor program in college of art and science with $2000/year scholarship and honor program in college of engineering with $8000/year. He did not get in honor college. I think his stats are decent. I guess his essay is not good enough for honor college. btw, are all the scholarships negotiable?

@markcheng with those stats its unbelievable that he was not HC material. A friend of my Ss got into HC Engineering (I saw the letter of FB so I know this is true) and apparently his SATs were 1440, so how is that possible when your S had a 1560??!! They say it’s the top % of applicants, but ‘top’ must be a holistic determination that does not rely solely on scores. Although your Ss stats were amazing also. Confused.
@markcheng I am very surprised that your son didn’t get into honor college, especially with achievement of US Physics Olympiad Gold Medalist. It looks to me that he could be getting into a very good school with so many impressive EC.
@markcheng I don’t think you can negotiate the honors college because that is invitation only, but maybe you can negotiate financial aid. Normally honors program students make $3k or while the minimum financial aid for honors college is $10k.
@totcol, or anybody, how can I contact honor college or call school of art and science to ask for more scholarship. Any advice will be highly appreciated.
My friend’s son got accepted to HC in 2017 with SAT of 2000(old). With Presidential scholarship, had no AP course… only hook… He graduated from one of the comp tech school… which he barely was able to.graduate…
Merit based scholarship is not need based. It is very difficult to appeal and get money if there is not a major change in finances in your family. I have many friends in the honors college who tried to appeal but got nothing, especially since the deadline to appeal has already passed.
You cannot get into the honors college as that is invitation only and 500 people have already been selected to live inside the honors college and only those selected to be in the honors college are guaranteed a scholarship
@markcheng Did your son apply to Rutgers by the Dec. 1 deadline to be considered for honors college? Are you in state or OOS? I know of a student with stellar stats who applied several months after the deadline (because he really didn’t want to go to in state Rutgers). He didn’t get in HC or HP.
Hi all, thank you very much for your advice and suggestions. A few friends of my son also got in the honor college. they all have similar academic credentials like my son’s. I guess my son did not write a good essay.
@markcheng I believe Rutgers only considers test scores and GPA for honors college/program so I doubt it’s his essay. I would contact admissions to inquire. (For reference, my child was awarded Rutgers Pres. scholarship last year w/HC. It’s hard to believe your son got no invitation with his stats.)
@markcheng If it makes you feel better, I know people who got into the hc with 1300 and 1400s.It’s not just about academics, it’s about how you are as a person. Your extracurriculars are very academically oriented, and obviously your son is extremely smart, much smarter than me who got the Presidential for engineering with hc. However, the honors college is looking for well rounded individuals.
