Rutgers Honors College acceptance 2019

@RutgersMetuchen Assuming you picked rigorous classes in HS and that you will submit an interesting Honors essay prior to December 1st, I speculate that your chance of getting a 10K scholarship at the SAS is above 50%.

School offered one AP (history part 1) Sophomore yr. took 5 APs junior year,Calculus BC, Chem, Biology,Statistics,History ll. That was the maximum my schedule allowed. Senior year could not accommodate more than 3,Physics,Psychology and APmicro economics. 8 APs total. Thanks for your help

I wanted to know my son’s chances of getting into soe in Rutgers. He is a senior now and will be applying early action. His has taken total 6 ap and 10 honors.

Sat : 1430 superscore ( math- 770 r+w - 660)
Subject test: Math level 2 - 770
Gpa: 4.0 ( straight A student)
He is in in top 2% of his class.

Subjects taken in junior year:
AP calc AB/BC
AP Physics 1
AP computer science A
Honors history
Electronics and robotics 1
( All above 94 in the above subjects)

Senior year
Ap physics C
Ap statistics
Honors English
Electronics and robotics 2
And remaining other computer related electives.

He has very good extracurriculars and plays a sport on state level ( won state championships) He also coaches kids in sports. ( part time job) and has decent volunteer hours.

Please let me know his chances for Rutgers engineering. Will he qualify for regular soe or honor academy soe?

Thanks ??

@engg2020 I stand by my earlier answer at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/22408829/#Comment_22408829

Note: School of Engineering Honors Academy is the name of the Rutgers SOE Honors program. It should not be confused with SOE Honors College, which has even higher requirements (and which this thread is about).

@ njengineerdad,

I was looking for more inputs from other students who have been accepted at Rutgers soe.

@engg2020 What is your end goal? Are you trying to come up with a list of colleges?

@NJEngineerDad

I was just trying to find out if my son has chances to be admitted to Rutgers soe. He does not mind entering as a regular (non honors) student. His only goal is to be accepted for engineering ( honors or non- honors)

Scored 800 Math 2; 780 Chem and 770 biology in Sat 2. How to report this score. There in no option to enter Sat 2 score in Rutgers .please help

How did you enter theSat 2 scores in Yourapplications?

Top 8% of Applicant Pool or Top 8% from Each School where the Applicant comes from

@rajaramans

Correction :- Its top 3% for Honors College & max of 10K merit aid. Its gotten extremely competitive

@RRRGSP Sometimes people confuse Rutgers’ honors programs with Rutgers Honors College. It is not the same thing. It is easier to get in an honors program (aka Honors Academy for SOE) than in the Honors College.

“Built on the legacy of honors education at Rutgers-New Brunswick, the Honors College is distinct from the school-based honors programs in the School of Arts and Sciences, School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, and School of Engineering.”

I do not know that 10K is the maximum merit aid at the Honors College. Based on what I saw last year I believe it is the minimum (which might or might be also the maximum but I think the maximum is probably still a full ride around 28K). On the other hand I think that getting in a honors program without getting in the Honors College means a maximum of 8K in merit.

@NJEngineerDad

Thanks so much. I knew Rutgers Honors College stats were “near” or equivalent to IVY, but they also require you to stay in the dorm for the 1st year. Meaning there is no commuter option at least for the 1st year, so budget conscious parents may kindly take note

My S17 has applied to Rutgets SoE, RBS and SAS. His stats are very good, but again, not sure if that is good enough to the Honor College.
He has got admission from Rutgers NB, but guess Honors Collge comes out in mid Feb , so keeping fingers crossed

@RRRGSP Although you are required to dorm for a year because of being in the honors college, being in the honors college guarantees you at least a $10k scholarship per year, which will offset the cost of living on cost of living on campus for just one year. On that note, if you get a full scholarship (presidential scholarship) that is dependent on your living in the honors college, you are required to live on campus for the first two years, but for all years your living expenses are taken care of. In the junior and senior years with the presidential scholarship, you get your dorming money in the form of a refund check

@NJEngineerDad also I can confirm that last year everyone who got into the honors college at any school received at least $10k from that school while the presidential scholarship value last year was $28000 but it will increase this year to reflect the increasing tuition.

I am currently an freshman honors college student in SOE who got a presidential scholarship with a 1530 SAT score. If any of you guys have questions, @ me and Ill answer if I have time. Classes are out for winter break

@Tictacmissus

Its great to know you landed a Presidential Scholarship with 1530 SAT in SoE & Congratulations on that

My s17 has a ACT 35.35 ( using concordance tables its equivalent to 1560 SAT) single attempt, 4 UW GPA, 600+ hours volunteering teaching disadvantaged kids , abroad
reasonable EC’s ( Finance Club, participated in the Fed Challenge & was a national semfinalist etc ) , Plus National Merit Semifinalist, expecting to be a NMF etc

He as also applied to SAS, SoE, RBS, he is keen on RBS as first choice followed by SAS & last SoE, so we are hoping for Honors in eithr of the three.

We don’t think we stand a chance for the Presidential, so in case we do even get Honors, its in the range of 10-14k we are thinking, which leaves us to cover the rest from our side/work study etc

But I heard Rutgers Honors college goes only by standardized testing scores & GPA;s and EC’s and Volunteering plays no role in admissions & scholarships

Please let us know your thoughts

@RRRGSP I would like to point out that if it were based on GPA and SAT alone, I definitely would not have gotten my scholarship. (Class rank also matters, you need to be top 10%). My extracurriculars were that I had 2 jobs, volunteered, was on the swim team, was a NMF, etc. I know 2 people who got into the honors college with a 1300 SAT score, which shows how much they look at other factors. Since it is the honors college that determines whether you receive the scholarship, the honors college likes to see well rounded individuals who give back to the community.
Your ACT definitely meets the minimum for a presidential scholarship/scholarships but the rest depends on your extracurriculars. I would say that you have a solid chance at a scholarship (especially with your impressive volunteering), but it is all very subjective as it is not just a numbers game.
Also top 8% from each school gets selected for honors college, it’s only competitive because many of these 8% use rutgers as a backup so only 3% or so actually attends. Around top 10% of candidates get a merit based scholarship and top 1-2% get the presidential scholarship

@Tictacmissus : will it be 6 years Free ride if presidential scholars of Pharmacy ? So far nobody mentioned about it :slight_smile: The school size probably the smallest after all, but with highest SATs

@orm2020 I am pretty sure that they do not offer presidential scholarship. First of all, presidential scholarship only covers undergrad (so not all 6 years) and the pharmacy program is 6 years. I’ve never met an HC student in pharm with a presidential scholarship and I know 3 out of the 9 of them. The pharmacy school is the stingiest with scholarships (much more so than SOE) so even if you get honors college I am not sure if you will get a scholarship. (And only 9 students last year got hc with pharmacy as it is the most competitive.) I wouldn’t count on getting any scholarship/honors college

@tictacmissus : I see , so it is better to be prepared for nothing . Will let you know if there is a surprise …
