@anonuser1234 I love that your son was voted most likely to join the peace corp! We visited U Conn and F&M, and Clark was on our original list, too. I actually feel good when people suggest schools S24 has considered—it makes me feel like we aren’t missing anything! Best wishes to your son!
Dickinson is back in the mix. S24 remembered that it has the highest percentage of classes smaller than 20 students of any school on his list (78%). Also, it has the supplemental essay prompt: “Share something about you that’s not already in your application,” which he already wrote for a different school.
S24’s original plan if he got a denial from W&M was to apply ED II to Conn College or Lafayette. He didn’t plan for a deferral! Now, he thinks he wants to apply everywhere else regular decision and wait until the end. Maybe we will hear from Wheaton before he has to decide about ED II…sometimes this feels a bit too much like a game of chess .
My D23 added Dickinson back into her mix last year after she had two early round deferrals. She also applied for their presidential scholarship and got it - have your S check that out. As I recall, not only was it more merit $ but also some extra programming. She had to write an essay to apply for that, but had one ready that she just had to tweak a little to use. And she reached out mid Dec to request an interview with her AO - maybe he wants to do that.
Of course, I am pulling for your S at Wheaton as well
Just happened across a Wheaton Admissions insta post from an hour ago which stated that things are happening and to keep an eye on your portals. Could this mean decision release later today/this evening!?! Best of luck to your son @3SailAway (and to the others on this thread who are waiting on Wheaton results @snappity207 @ArtMom22 )
ETA: now I’m thinking maybe this is ED not EA?
Thanks for thinking of us! They just posted on the main feed that ED1 are out - mine did EA, so we will wait a few more days!
Oh, don’t worry, we got very excited for a minute here! The waiting is killing us (at least, me)
Juniata College has a museum studies major or minor, good merit, no greek life, small classes. Not sure about support services.
I’m going to start checking Wheaton’s instagram!
It’s on their admissions one: https://instagram.com/wheatonadm
Looking back on that account, it appears EA has gone out between December 18-20 the last few years.
Hi,
Your son sounds a lot like my s27 and a little like my s28. My s27 ended up at USC on the sailing and equestrian teams. He has had a language waiver since 2nd grade and while the high school to college process was anything BUT easy (meaning the uncertainty in applying), being in college has been wonderful and accommodating. USC honored his language waiver, and gave him a list of 72 classes he can take instead of a language, all of which seem to hit his interest points as a history major.
I would just say, don’t be shy about the accommodations he needs. Books on tape, a testing room so he can dictate instead of type, a notetaker, there are so many things that can help. Also, if being active and outside balances his studying and the pressures of life, there are sailing and running programs that do hit that middle ground. My son’s teams have been so helpful in making him feel part of a new community almost instantly.
I don’t think I saw Bowdoin, or Rodger Williams on your list, but they might be interesting if he wanted to sail.
Good luck as this all rolls out!
@CAboardingparent It’s great to hear that USC has been accommodating for your son! S24 definitely needs a physical outlet in order to balance time spent sitting and studying. Part of the reason W&M is still his first choice is the flexibility of the club sailing team, and the thriving ultimate frisbee and intramural scene.
I think S24 will be assertive about the accommodations he needs. Lately, he hasn’t been taking his extra time on tests because he doesn’t have off periods after most of his classes. In order to take extra time, he needs to go to the department office during lunch or break. He has heard students talking about how this isn’t fair because kids could look up answers before they return to finish the test. He hates the idea that people will assume he is cheating, so he stopped taking the extra time.
I think this will be different in college. My D21 also has dyslexia and dyscalculia (although not as severe as S24). Her professors give plenty of time for tests, even the ones with multiple essays. She also doesn’t have classes back to back, so she could stay if she needed to. Plus, kids with accommodations can schedule tests in the testing center with extra time.
S24’s school is very competitive, and many people assume that students with accommodations are just trying to get ahead. S24 has qualified for services since age three, and he decided to go test optional for applications and disclose his disabilities. Still, he feels the judgement of people who are mad about the Varsity Blues scandal etc. It’s definitely a first world problem though! He’ll work it out.
Yes, yes, yes and yes. They’ve been through all those stages with their accommodations. W&M looks like a fantastic school, I hope it comes through in regular decision. My kids also chose to disclose their LDs and I think it helped them end up (or soon to end up) at schools that wanted them just they way they are
And, club sailing is the best, nothing like a day on the water to shake it all off.
Wheaton’s instagram story indicates our EA kids are about to get a decision. I am at work and D24 is home (her school is on break already) and we have a massive wind/rain storm happening, and if we lose internet before a decision I will implode. Good luck to all!
We also had that storm pass through! It was raining sideways and the wind blew over a sturdy wooden bench in our yard. It’s waning now and we still have electricity . Sending all my best wishes for your 24s, @snappity207 and @ArtMom22 !
Thanks! We are in the eye of the storm too! Thankfully, we still have power. But my basement is flooded.
D24 was deferred at her high reach early decision, which is not a bad outcome and she remains hopeful.
We are very excited to see Wheaton’s decision today.
I’m sorry about the deferral, but we totally understand, since S24 was also deferred at his high reach ED school. It is still his first choice but he is happy with his EA acceptances so far, and excited to see where he can visit for accepted student days.
He’s still in school right now, and has been maddeningly laid back about checking his portals, so I don’t know when he will look or whether he’ll even tell me before taking his time coming home . Meanwhile, this is me
. Good luck!
I can tell you from reading admissions files that I find specific references to programs and professors really persuasive. Like "William and Mary is my top choice not only because of the incredible academics but because of opportunities to learn from Professor XYZ in his (specialized seminar class), and the potential to assist him in his research on (whatever his latest research project is). In addition, only Williamm and Mary offer experiential opportunities in (whatever lab there is- a business start up lab, biology lab, art lab- whatever) - where I would have the opportunity to work with Professors like xyz, and xyz and maybe help with their work on blah, blah, blah. I don’t know if this sounds over the top of not, but the research involved to name these professors, name their classes, research etc demonstrates a true interest in a college. It takes a hour or two of work to put it together so only a student interested (really interested) is going to do it. I can’t tell you how many files I read where people forget to find an replace the college name in the essay- so specialized insight like this works. I never usually give up this insight but my kiddo is also a sailor, same GPA, LD’s so I want a win for your kiddo. If I were to have him write a LOCI, I would add that.
Also one my son’s classmates heard from Wheaton this morning, us not yet, but his friend applied EA and heard before lunch.
On the portal? We are now running on generator (internet line works though) and the peak of the storm has passed but the 70mph gusts have wreaked havoc in my area. I had people checking Instagram for me before the internet/ data would work, our phones could only call, but no post yet! I might make her check.
I am beginning to wonder whether the Wheaton Admissions department planned to send out all the EA decisions today but then they were affected by this storm.
