S24's Journey (3.5, learning disabilities)

This is so helpful, @anonuser1234 ! S24 wants to take the field trip classes where you get to go to historic sites and museums all over the state with a professor and like 7 other students. It would be one of his favorite activities (experiencing history), but with his own PhD to answer all his questions! He also wants to be involved with this program called NIAHD, and the Lemon Project. I’m sure he’ll be motivated to look at the areas of research of the history professors too. He was actually at a bit of a loss about how to narrow down his “Why W&M?” for a LOCI, so this will be a great focus.

I hope your kiddo’s journey is going well! :sailboat:

My kid has people ALL OVER refreshing for her (with a “my truck has satellite internet, I will come over if they are released” plan when we were TOTALLY down) and one DM’ed a few hours ago and was told “soon!” The kid is actually pretty chill about it (I am less chill but keeping cool and confident on the outside. LOL) (She did check after the above post and nothing in the portal…)

@snappity207 70 mph! Yikes. I hope everyone in your area is okay! S24 has checked his Wheaton portal twice, and I don’t want to stress him out by suggesting he look again.

I think @ArtMom22 could be right about the storm affecting Wheaton. I checked the power outage map for Massachusetts and it looks like 2,133 customers in Norton have lost power.

It also says:

Start Time -
Dec 18, 2023, 10:40 AM

Estimated Restoration -
Dec 21, 2023, 12:00 PM

Crew Status -
Unassigned

I hope everyone at the college is safe!

He got into Baylor, we are not really religious so not sure- BUT instead of tailgating for games, they “sailgate” and all the sailboats pull up in the river before a game. Pretty sure the videos is why he wanted to apply!

We are fortunate (if you can call it that) that we have already lost all the old trees in prior storms, and have a generator that can run the house, but 375k households without power int the state, which only has 1.3 million residents! I had to call security at my campus as I was watching a huge spruce lift from the base with the saturation and wind, they closed the entrance that tree stands next to (and the campuses around here all closed by afternoon). Power company won’t even put up buckets until tomorrow because of the winds, at least it’s not below freezing this time. Thanks for looking up that info, I will hope that the Wheaton folks are staying safe and dry and NOT trying to distract themselves from the weather by madly refreshing instagram!

I get it! S24 applied to Hobart & William Smith after seeing photos of their gorgeous boathouse, which I’m sure were taken in July. They probably shut down their sailing program before Halloween  .

Congrats on Baylor! I’m from VA where Baylor has a very positive reputation. S24 is wavering on whether to write the supplement and apply to St. Mary’s of Maryland where they have keelboat sailing and windsurfing…but it’s a bit small and isolated…

Randomly came across your post and wanted to say that I attended their French camp for 5 years and was a counselor for 3. Ended up a French major and lived in France twice. I grew up far from MN and now it has such a special place in my heart. They have no problem motivating kids to speak target language bc it’s FUN and kids do speak English in free time with peers. It’s the counselors who don’t break into English EVER except nights off once every couple of weeks. C’est la vie!!

For those still waiting on Wheaton, I’ve talked with friends in the area and some aren’t expecting power back until late tomorrow night - so they were definitely impacted by the storm!
Another school she’s applied to, Endicott, posted on their story basically “PLEASE STOP CALLING WE DONT KNOW WHEN THE POWER WILL BE BACK” so I wonder if the 12/23 date for them will be impacted by weather, too.
We are still running on generator, here… wild damage with trees and poles down. Hope others are safe, warm, and dry!

Ugh, waitlisted at Endicott (they just released EA) which makes me more nervous about Wheaton. (Endicott didn’t have supplemental essay, portfolio, ao meetings, or DI though so… maybe that will matter? The anxiety - for me! - is real.)

Wheaton - in the last week or so, she said “awaiting mid-year report” appeared on her portal. Her GC sent 1stq grades last month, so now I am wondering if this is being deferred to RD for her semester/ mid year grades. Anyone else have this? (the semester ends late Jan)

I’m sorry about Endicott, @snappity207 ! My parents have friends with grandchildren who love it there. Fingers crossed for regular decision and for Wheaton.

It’s so hard to know where our kiddos will and won’t be accepted! S24 has faith that he’ll end up where he’s supposed to be, but I’m not as laid back! One of my closest friends has a college freshman who’s preparing transfer applications right now. Academics at his school are great but he feels like he isn’t finding his people😔. He’s a totally different kid from S24, but it’s still worrisome.

Does your daughter have an app in at University of New England?

Thanks! Did you guys get a decision, or do you not see that in the portal?
She does have an app in at UNE, and she was already accepted to Lesley.

I do not see waiting for mid-year grades on my son’s portal for Wheaton- where is listed as waiting? on the checklist? (just so I make sure I am not missing it). I love Lesley, I really do, I think it’s a great school.

Yes, on the checklist. It’s the only red X - Mid-year report, something like that. Everything else is a green check.

Lesley is her least favorite as she really wanted a more insular campus than they offer, and we would have to have the waiver to make it work which I have no idea the odds there. Wheaton is the only one that we could maybe make work without CIC waiver… so it’s an especially big decision to be waiting on.

We have not gotten a decision yet (so I don’t know how to read into it) but we do not have that on the checklist at all. If we hear anything one way or the other I will update though.

I just checked and my son did get accepted, in the last 3 seconds. (now I have to log out and pretend like I didn’t just check).

Deferred! Which is honestly FINE, she has had such a great start to senior year! Leaving this info for future kids. It would be great to get a solid YES, but we will take a “prove it!” for sure.

And congratulations to your son! That is awesome! Only about 90 days to an OFFICIAL decision for my D24, but who’s counting? (Me. I’m counting.)

I hope others are getting good news tonight!

D24 got a yes, with good merit aid, honors college, and a Balfour scholar. Good news! Worth the wait!

Did you all consider Stonehill? We haven’t applied there although it was on the potential list, but it seems to fall in the same category. I am not sure if it’s eligible for CIC.

Stone hill is not on the list, so not on the radar for us. We drove by on Wheaton visits, though!

@snappity207 I wish your daughter’s deferral had been an acceptance, but maybe Wheaton just wants to see her keep her grades up for second quarter. I hope she is weathering the deferrals okay!
