They’ve made an arrest. They linked the suspect to DNA found on her underwear which was discovered by a lake.

"Authorities said Monday they have strong “physical evidence” linking a registered sex offender to the disappearance of suburban San Diego teenager Chelsea King.

Investigators arrested 30-year-old John Albert Gardner on suspicion of rape and murder in connection with her disappearance.

The arrest came Sunday after 120 law enforcement officers and 1,400 volunteers scoured Rancho Bernardo Community Park in San Diego for the 17-year-old honor student."

I was one of those (of over 1000) who went to volunteer to look for her. I hope they can still manage to find her alive somehow.

I wish they wouldn’t refer to victims in cases like this as “honor students,” as if that somehow makes it worse.

This is the nightmare scenario that I worried (and still worry) about all through my Dd’s college years. She also was a HS runner and thought nothing of running alone when she went away to her urban campus. And here, this girl was running in a suburban, thought-to-be safe area. It’s crazy.
I feel so sorry for her family and friends.

^^^^I often used to go jogging at night when I was in college. At that age, many just do not appreciate the danger. I thought my Mom was just paranoid when she would try to disuade me. I stopped rolling my eyes after I got mugged one night. I was lucky nothing worse happened to me.

I thought it was a pretty ominous sign when they arrested a sex predator sans finding the young woman. I felt sick inside. What agony for the family.

I hope they find her, and I appreciate all of the people who are helping to search. (Thanks, ucla-ucsd-dad). I’m surprised that there weren’t a lot more people around running at the time she disappeared since it was so early. My D – and lots of her friends – thought nothing of going for a run in the daytime. We always worried about evening runs. (Is Lake Hodges low now, or are there a lot of partially submerged snags and trees?)

And I agree with Hunt – it doesn’t matter if she’s an honor student or not, it is still a tragedy.

“I wish they wouldn’t refer to victims in cases like this as “honor students,” as if that somehow makes it worse.”

gah, yes, it seems that every missing teenager is an “honors student” of one kind or another -_-

nevertheless, still a horrible tragedy. ima go join that facebook group to lend some support.

It’s suburban and a somewhat upscale area but there’s a lot of pretty wild terrain around here and in no time one can be quite away from anyone else - away from houses/cars/etc. There are many miles of a myriad of trails right in that area with a lot of cover from brush, boulders, hills. The area burned in the 2007 fires but a lot of the brush is back.

I’ve been over many of those trails and it’s not hard to find yourself alone. This is especially true for a longer distance walker/runner who might decide to go further along the less well traveled paths.

It was low until the rains this winter and now the lake’s back up - to the east side of the freeway bridge. One recent change is that a foot/bike bridge was put in just to the west of the freeway bridge linking the trails on the north side of the lake with those on the south side. All the trees that grew in the drought have died due to being submerged again and then many of them burned in the 2007 fires that swept through there. There are lots of submerged snags. The search and rescue and surf rescue and divers have been searching around that shore area of the lake.

I never thought of the statement one is an A student or an honor student as a negative thing. It is indeed, horrific all around. I feel so bad for her and her family.

But I see such statements as simply conveying basic but positive identity facts about someone. If she was in college they’d say biology major at X state. If she was working, they’d say biologist working at so-and-so. Or if working from home, mother of 5. I think such descriptors also increases a sense of connection to someone, and reduces the likelihood that readers attribute her missing to being her fault in some way (e.g. doesn’t sound like a run away). These are important for increasing energy behind finding her.

Yeah. They’re either “honor students” or “just starting to get their life together”.

I can’t imagine him taking her very far from where they found her clothing. When they picked him up, he had wet pants and mud stains to about his knees. The area is spread out but there are many hikers and bikers that travel this area continuously. He could not have taken her very far w/out being seen. The recent heavy rain may have covered his trail unfortunately. The outpouring of volunteerism has been tremendous . It won’t be long before someone locates her.

They found her cellphone in her car. I wonder if that was common practice for her or if the guy got to her just as she exited her car.

My D usually didn’t run with her cellphone (but I’m thinking that I’m going to make a hearty plea that she do so going forward.)

I haven’t heard that - I heard they picked him up at a sit down type restaurant 3 days later (yesterday).

Sorry, I can’t find the source, but I also heard about the wet pants/mud stains as well on one of the local news stations sites. I’ve been following the story constantly and none of the stations are ever on the same page!

I’m also from the San Diego area and it’s just such a tremendous, scary thought that Chelsea could have been any one of my peers or myself. This brings back memories from the Danielle van Dam case, in both of these, we know friends of friends of the family.

I hope this case will get wrapped up soon and bring some sort of calm for her parents and family!

Ughhh - they just found the body of a female in the lake. They haven’t stated the identity yet.

So tragic. Every parents’ worst nightmare. While no major national internet news sites seem to have that latest news…
It is reported that the body is that of Chelsea King here:

Horrible, horrible. Makes me so angry.

I really feel for the family. I can’t think of anything worse.

Seeing the 2 fathers together felt so awful.
