So terrorists and the mentally ill cannot just shoot us - they can bomb us, stab us, run us over with a car, etc., etc. I get it. But reducing easy access to guns, particularly high power rifles seems to me to be a step in the right direction. No civilian needs an AK-47. Where is the downside in sensible gun control?

@katliamom I agree it is. The majority seem to happen in two war zones (or semi-war zones) : Israel and Iraq. What I don’t get is the seemingly random attacks in the other countries.

@GMTplus7 Yes, Islamist terrorists are a threat, but I think it is the American expats who have the most to worry about per your list. I think that is the point of the gun debate here, is that in one year, there have been more domestic mass shootings than in all three lists combined.

I agree vigilance is a must. What I don’t understand is how buying guns is going to save you from say, a bomber instead of a shooter.

Can we stop it with the sharia law thing? First of all, there is no unitary thing called “sharia law”—there are lots and lots (and lots) of different versions of it, some of which really aren’t necessarily all that different from the US legal code.* Also, the whole possibility of sharia law coming to the US in any of our lifetimes is so remote as to be silly, so why is this even a point of argument?

  • No matter what some seem to have gleaned from Wikipedia.

Islamic militants. Many thousands of murders. Many, many attacks.

Christian militants. How many of them?

It’s a matter of scale. There appear to be a very large number of Muslims with, as you call it, “homicidal needs”. You may consider them not to be true Muslims, I certainly hope not. But these false Muslims are extremely plentiful.

Before blackballing people’s rights based on a list, the salient question is, “Is the list verifiably accurate to be used as such a rights-denying tool?”

Upwards of 40% of the list is not terrorists or people with terrorist activities, but people who may have associations with people who then happen to know someone who is suspected of terror activities or support. And even then, the person who started the association chain may have nothing to do with terrorism. That is one high conjecture rate!

Here is the problem - terrorists have accountants and bankers and all sorts of regular day-to-day activities like normal people. If someone and a now known person with terrorist’ activities happen to have the same accountant, happen to eat at the same restaurants, kids go to the same schools, and happen to live in the same area, should your rights as a citizen be taken away because someone at the FBI thinks you might know the person and wants to talk to you about him / her - even though you have not a clue who the person is? Of course not.

This means there are upwards of 20,000 people who have not even been charged or connected with any terror activities of any sort, but someone has decided somehow they should be watched. Who decided? Why did they decide? What did they use to decide to place someone on the list? These questions should be reviewed by a court to establish probable cause before taking away any constitutional rights.

Do you think it is proper to use such a list to take away rights when errors of such magnitude clearly happen, even for well-known people? Who the heck puts Senator Kennedy on the list, not once, but five darn times? Similar to a colleague who has been put on three or four times, gets off and it just keeps coming back. He laughs now, but it is ludicrous. His nickname on the company boards is now “terrorist,” a running joke. Heard he is now off again.

Definitely use the no-fly list to question people if for some reason one gets on it, but that is a far cry from then saying one’s rights as citizen are no longer valid even though you have never been charged with jack or even have shown to have done jack.

@dfbdfb THANK YOU. That’s what I have been trying to say for 100 posts now.

Moving on…

@dfbdfb THANK YOU. That’s what I have been trying to say for 100 posts now.”

Maybe if you hadn’t said that you saw nothing wrong with Sharia law, and what was the problem with it in some of those 100 posts, you wouldn’t have started a discussion about it! 8-|

@busdriver11 You see it’s false statements like this that inflame the public. The amount of worldwide terrorists who identify as Muslims (you’re right, I don’t consider them Muslims) is very small.
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/01/14/are-all-terrorists-muslims-it-s-not-even-close.html

The whole “Not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims” is WRONG. Just as wrong as a teacher telling students that one million is the largest number in the world, or that zero is positive.

The havoc done is massive, yes, but it is done by a very small precentage.

And what difference would it have made if they got the guns illegally? Like none.

They clearly had access to a supply pipeline that delivered serious bomb-making equipment. So why in the world do people think they could not get guns illegally as well? It defies the imagination that people think if they outlaw something that is harder to get. Hard drugs have been outlawed forever and the average 9th grader knows who are the top drug dealers in his school. And guns are very easy to transport undetected because they can be shipped in separate pieces - a black market heaven.

And an impartial source :

ETA:

Well I did mean I saw nothing wrong with Sharia law the way I practice it. If you had understood Sharia law to be like dbfdbf had explained it, you wouldn’t have asked the question in the first place :-/

@InfinityMan

Any news article that starts off with the words “Conservative lawmakers and activists across the world…” is not impartial

You really think there are a small number of people who are Islamic terrorists? Perhaps we have a different definition of terrorist. I consider people who belong to groups like al Qaeda and ISIS terrorists. Maybe you don’t. Amazing how a very small number of people could take over large swaths of Iraq and Syria.

"The whole “Not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims” is WRONG. Just as wrong as a teacher telling students that one million is the largest number in the world, or that zero is positive.

Of course all terrorists are not Muslim.

And a very small percentage of over one and a half billion people, is still a large number of people, particularly if you include those who support them.

I hope other Muslims are not ignoring the problem like you seem to be. This is a problem that will need to be dealt with by Muslims, particularly since they are the majority of those affected by this cancer. They deserve all the help that they request.

These long posts about Shariah law are not on topic and are not in keeping with the prohibition regarding discussion of politics and religion.

Here is what one self-labeled “conservative activist” thinks of the New York Times’ front-page editorial:
http://www.erickontheradio.com/2015/12/i-shot-holes-in-the-new-york-times-editorial/

What a classy fellow, rosered

So you advocate the legalization of hard drugs? That seems to be the logical conclusion of your argument.

Please read again, as that is not the conclusion of my post because the post fundamentally addresses civics not the attainability of contraband.

It is no secret that laws in civil society are made on moral grounds, i.e., the majority of society believes that something is wrong, therefore, they outlaw it. Underage drinking is similar; but, even here on CC, there people who have no problem turning a blind eye to underage college drinking regardless of the assault issues that follow underage drinking. Illegal to do, but easily attainable.

Given the above explanation, my post only says that outlawing drugs (or guns) does not necessarily make them harder to acquire; outlawing is, however, a statement of what society thinks is right and wrong. However, black markets have no problems supplying the many vices of people - that still does not mean society should be make such vices legal.

This dynamic is playing out with the gun control issue, as the majority of Americans (60%+) are not in favor of giving up those rights because many have rightly concluded that outlawing guns will not make them harder to get for people who will use them indiscriminately, such as these terrorists, but will only make it impossible for those who want to defend themselves against such criminals to do as much.

Yes, I understand that outside three or so posters on here, the issue is not outlawing guns entirely, moreso the placing more restrictions and requirements etc… However, gun control advocates have run into a serious credibility issue - that is, regardless of a shooting’s situation the first thing they say is “more gun control,” with no analysis whatsoever, even when it is clear that more gun control would not have stopped a particular shooting. That reflexive, lack of analysis approach makes people not trust the motives of gun control advocates because it comes off as shady and opportunistic.

This lack of trust can be traced directly to the Internet, as the mainstream media is no longer the main supplier of news. People are not blind to the fact that the tightest gun control possible (Paris is a 100% disarmed city) did not stop Charlie Hebdo massacre and the most recent restaurant and nightclub attack from occurring. Many Americans get it that if people are making bombs and getting odd shipments and deliveries, then they can just as easily be sent guns, even with the tightest gun control.

Paris is serving as a lab for the world that gun control is something you may want to do morally, but it does not stop the flow of guns to people who want them. And CA is even more instructive for bombs are already illegal, but the terrorists were able to possess those too.

So what have the majority of people concluded -they have concluded that if the bad guys are going to get their guns, then I need to be able to at least have a fighting chance to defend myself and my family. It is a basic human calculus - self-preservation… And all the talk about the kids, suicides, girlfriends and the like are nothing compared to realizing that the people in Paris and CA had no chance because they all were disarmed, but the bad guys were not. People love themselves and their families and most are concluding they want to have a fighting chance to live if faced with a deadly situation. So blaming the NRA is a waste of time for it is your congressmen who is not listening to you because their constituents have pretty much told them, “No way are you going to leave me defenseless. Want your job, then leave my guns alone, as I have a moral right to defend myself.”
