San Bernardino, CA Mass Shooting

I have no trouble at all thinking that in a situation where more than one person was shooting at me, I’d get the number wrong, and everything else too.

Trump clarifies where he stands on Muslim immigration.

@“Cardinal Fang”

Also this is the link for her interview, she was not being shot at, which makes her more credible. She saw them coming into the building as she looked at the window, and she described them as white, athletic build. Which makes me think it couldnt have been the wife. As I said, those two were planning something, but something doesnt add up in this story.

By now the police would have done some ballistics work and fingerprint work. If there were a third shooter on the loose, we would know.

Last evening at a Riverside mall jewel thieves used axes to break the cases at a Ben Bridge store. The loud sounds were interpreted by those in the mall to be gunshots and pandemonium broke out. The police thought it might be another attack.

People are jittery. One woman interviewed said that from now on she was shopping online.

There have been numerous incidents of mass shootings when police have been told of multiple shooters, only to learn absolutely that there was only one.

It would not surprise me to find out that early reports of 3 shooters were inaccurate.

“I dont think she would get the number wrong.”

I think one can get the number wrong when there is a lot of running, screaming, ducking, bullets flying, etc. Not exact comparison, but in the infamous gorilla experiment, not everyone is able to count the number of passes… or notice some other details (player leaving, curtain changes color, etc.)

Oh I got the number of passes correct. I was perfect.

On the other hand, I never noticed a big black gorilla in the video right in the middle of things. COMPLETELY missed it. So did my brother and my Ds.

@BunsenBurner

Rest assured they do get vetted. If an applicant gets selected, then there is a thorough screening process that follows. Only those who are vetted get green cards.

I’m familiar w the process bcs years ago we encouraged our au pair to apply. She actually got selected. We were her sponsors and helped her navigate the vetting documention.

" People are jittery. One woman interviewed said that from now on she was shopping online. "
That is never good to hear

@BunsenBurner thats just it, she wasnt in the room with all the commotion. She saw the guys enter the building while looking out a window.

@Nrdsb4 - that video you posted showing an experiment to see how armed and trained people do when confronted by a surprise shooter was totally fascinating- I think it should be something everyone getting a concealed carry permit should see…

@myjanda, I think a lot of people would be surprised. I’m sure there are tons of people who would say “well I would do SO MUCH BETTER because blah blah blah.” But it was pretty interesting nevertheless.

Number is actually one of the easiest things to get wrong.

(For a decent science-written-for-nonspecialist-audiences take on all this, by the way, you should look up Simons & Chabris’s “invisible gorilla” book and blog, referred to by others, at http://theinvisiblegorilla.com/blog/.)

Since someone mentioned Trump’s call for a “complete shutdown” on Muslims entering the US upthread, I’ll note that his idea wasn’t limited to just refugees and other sorts of immigrants, but also included a call to prevent Muslim tourists(!) from entering the country. Not sure how you would enforce that, but it’s a good example of a position more extreme than anyone (I think) on this thread has taken that has been taken by someone with a rather prominent social position.

Year 2015 and a leading presidential candidate is talking about systematic discrimination against a billion people.

I really have no words. Many of you know that I work on Eugenics in the early 20th century. The next time someone asks why my work is important, I’m just going to play that line by Trump. The boogeyman had changed over the years but it’s the exact same irrational thinking.

NBC News has just reported that the leading male presidential candidate wants to ban US citizens living abroad from re-enetering the country, if they are Muslim. Presumably this includes US college students studying overseas. I really, really hope this report was incorrect.

Lovely- this just helps Isis recruit and radicalize Muslims who are feeling marginalized.

Which is just a hop, skip, and a jump from some other even more extreme and despicable actions.

If the stakes weren’t so high, his buffoonery would almost be amusing.

I remember hearing that exact same woman on the radio the afternoon of the shooting, before they’d caught anyone, and she was just absolutely positive there were three shooters; she was watching from her office window which was in another building.

So some American citizen from Yale who is excited to be studying abroad in Edinburgh wouldn’t be able to come back home? This makes no sense. She can’t stay in the UK, because she’s an American. Where is she supposed to go? This does not seem to be thought through in the tiniest amount.
