San diego state university- sdsu class of 2022 admitted students!

@cocoonutty: Freshman have priority first semester so you should get all your classes but you may not get your exact class times. If required classes fill up, they will open more spots to accommodate all Freshman. You will sign up for your required GE’s first then your major prep courses next. During orientation you will receive a personalized course list to outline your required courses you need to take for Freshman year.

Do u have to wait until student orientation to sign up for classes? I see most of the classes already filled up in my web portal for fall 2018 including the GE’s.

@SmartGurl17 that seems weird. Everyone will be assigned a registration date, but those that go to orientation will be allowed to sign up earlier than that date. All fall registration fees must also be paid 2 weeks before registration. That also is confusing to me, because how do they know how many hours one plans on taking

@texcalmom I clicked on “my class schedule” and “plan for a class” and then I saw the schedules for the courses needed. Idek how ppl even already registered then. :-/

@Smartgurl17: Continuing students have already registered. Once Freshman orientation sessions begin, SDSU will open up more classes for the in-coming Freshman. Do not worry, you will get your classes and @texcalmom is correct in that you have to pay your tuition fees prior to attending orientation so you can register.

@Gumbymom How do they know how many hours you plan on taking. It also seems like the housing/community you get will affect the total. Will we even have that total beforehand to allow us to pay 2 weeks before orientation if you have an early July date. Ours has to go through a trust first, so would like a $ sooner than later

@texcalmom the tuition is based on PT 0-6 units or FT 6.1+ units. So it is one of two prices. Assuming your kid will be going full time it is a set price that you can see already on the website. The way I read it is you only pay for the basic tuition to register for classes/orientation. If out of state which I believe you are then you have to pay the per unit fee before the first day of class. You may want to double check but found this link which might be helpful. http://bfa.sdsu.edu/financial/student/documents/fall2018moneymattersupdated032918.pdf

@texcalmom: @Bean981 is correct in that are only 2 prices for tuition. Basically part time 0-6 units and full time 6.1+ units plus your OOS fees. If you pay for the full time tuition and your student drops below the 6.0 units after registration, you will get a refund.

I pay the tuition fees as soon as they are available so I do not have to worry about it at the last minute. This is one of my pet peeves with the Cal state system since you and your student are responsible for checking when they register and when you have to pay the fees. My other son attended a UC and he would register for classes each quarter, then I would get a bill sent to me based on his registered courses.

@Gumbymom - so if I already know my son will be full-time, can I pay the fees now and get that out of the way?

@SmartGurl17 - how did you figure out all the classes you need already - did you use the “MAP” and looked up classes under ‘GE Composition or GE Humaitites’ for example?

@SDSchools Yes. I called the Student Finance Department and they confirmed. The other costs with be submitted after registration

@SDSchools Pretty much! Just checking on timings, profs, and what courses I can choose from in the GE section.

Check out my map under the portal and that will give you the classes they need for their major as well as GE categories. You can also look at the course catalog online and look at the graduation requirements in section 4 and you will see how many units they need in which categories and the classes that meet those requirements. http://arweb.sdsu.edu/es/catalog/ .

Our portal had a good update today - Under housing where it had said “Incomplete - Missing Payment” has now changed to “Agreement Received and Complete.”

If u can’t attend student orientation and they mail u the packet, do u have to wait till registration starts to register for classes?

@SmartGurl17 - do you already have an idea of good/easy (lol) professors for some of the GE courses?

So glad I found this page - everyone is so helpful (with such a stressful process)!!

@SDSchools: You can use Rate My Professor to check on reviews for specific professors.

@SmartGurl17: Call admissions and ask if you can register for classes now if you cannot attend orientation. Your portal should show a registration date and time of when you can sign up based on your orientation session you choose.

I know some schools make students wait until after all the Freshman Orientation sessions are completed before you can sign up classes if they are unable to attend. Also signing up now may limit your choices since they will open up more classes/times once Freshman orientation begins but you may not even be allowed to register for classes at this point. You could still setup a Wish list of the courses you want until your registration date and time. I highly recommend you attend an Orientation session and want until then to register for classes.

@SDschools For GE Oral Communication, I think A. Merritt, M. Rap and C. MacFarland-Thuet seems easy teachers depending on which oral comm course u wanna take.
Honestly, every GE course has at least one easy teacher. Just check the website @gumbymom told you abt.
I still need to research the other GE’s lol.
What major u takin?

@SmartGurl17 Both my son and I check this site. Today this is mom. He was accepted as Civil Engineering major. He’s interested in in either Civil or Mechanical Engineering or if those don’t work out, Accounting. So were trying to look at all 3 “MAPs” to line up as much classes as possible. Looks like he needs to take Placement tests first in order to take Calculus and Chem? So, if he can get an ‘easy’ teacher in some of the other GE classes, that would help. Definitely checking out the website mentioned!

@SDSchools FYI those placement tests need to have their scores reported before orientation in order to get the classes you want. If he is taking AP Calc AB and scores a 3 he will have to take Math 150, if he gets a 4 or 5 then he gets credit for Math 150. If he is taking AP Calc BC and passes he gets credit for Math 151 also. Then he wont need to take the math assessment. For Chem they would have had to take AP Chem I believe to waive the assessment which I know my son didnt. He took the test at the end of April and said it was really easy. It was 60 questions and you need to get 31 right. 20 problems are simple math, 20 are mediocre chem and 20 more difficult chem questions. My son took Honors chem and thought it was pretty easy. Regular calculators are allowed just not graphing ones.
