San Diego weather right now?

Those that live there or visiting right now, is it warm enough for shorts during the day?it will be 65 degrees when we are there, but with the humidity level, hopefully will not feel chilly.

I don’t live in SD but further up the coast. If it’s 65 and clear skies it feels warm. If it’s June Gloom in May it feels cold. My H wears shorts pretty much all year. He might put on long pants if it’s a big rain.

You’ll probably be comfortable in shorts in the middle of the day, but in the morning until maybe 11 and starting around 5pm it gets pretty chilly. This all depends on where you’ll be, too. If by the coast, the temperature swings from mid- day to nighttime are less extreme. I always bring a sweater/sweatshirt wherever I go!

Thanks, I guess I’ll just bring enough for a temp flux. I just don’t like to overpack anymore, but it seems I’ll need to be prepared.

It is 66 degrees right now at my office in San Diego about 5 miles from the coast. Weather is looking like the mid 60’s near the beach for the next week with some rain possible. I don’t wear shorts in this weather and I was raised in SoCal.

We live a mile from the coast and it’s 70 and sunny right now (4 pm). Basically if it’s sunny, you’ll be fine in shorts. If it’s cloudy or night, personal tolerance. We went to happy hour last night. DH was in shorts and short sleeves; I was in jeans and short sleeves with a sweater for after the sun went in.

@conmama, I just wanted to let you know I’m so jealous. I really wanted to go to San Diego next week, and I made reservations, but my husband really didn’t want to get on a plane (too much work travel lately) so we are taking a driving trip. Enjoy!

Thanks @1214mom , I haven’t been out of town for 6 months, so I am soooooo ready! Thanks everyone for letting me know, I’m so envious you get to live there!

My rule of thumb for daily high temperatures here in San Diego is take the official weather bureau forecast or reading (which is recorded very near the coast) and add one degree to it for every mile inland from the coast you are or will be - up to a limit of about 15-20 degrees warmer. It doesn’t get hundreds of degrees hotter hundreds of miles inland, but within the San Diego metro area this rule will hold more or less true for most warm, sunny days.

There are four weather zones in San Diego county: coast, inland, mountain, and desert. We live close enough to the coast that we can be under the marine layer but drive a couple of miles inland (like to Balboa Park) and get full sun. A friend in Little Italy once texted me a picture she took from her balcony of Point Loma (where we live) with the cloud bank…and sent a smiley face.

OTOH, it can be in the 90’s inland and we’re in sunny 70’s with a lovely breeze.

@Marilyn - Yeah, those are the four zones the TV weather people give forecasts for, but I can never quite figure out where Coast leaves off and Inland takes over. I live in a coastal town in North County but our house is about 6 miles inland. Our high temps usually fall somewhere between the forecast for the coast and forecast for Inland.

We’ve had marine layer every morning for a couple of days. It is chilly (to me) in the mornings. We’ve also had strong cool winds in the afternoons on the coast. I heard it’s going to rain Monday or Tuesday, which is very unusual

I live in inland San Diego County (takes us 15-20 minutes to get to the beach), and its been cool/cloudy in the mornings requiring a sweater- light 60’s-66.

Midday, at work, it’s warm but not warm enough for short shorts.

Right now, it is sunny, but windy and cool.

No, we are not in “summer” weather and we are not “tropical”. We are experiencing “May Gray”.
That usually means cloudy for most of the day, but, the sun has been appearing at midday.

Men usually wear shorts-cargo, in our area, but they usually have on light sweatshirts when the gray appears. If you want to bring shorts, that’s on you. I personally think it’s too cool for shorts.

I’m in shorts right now

San Diego climate can be considered as Mediterranean rather than tropical.

I was just there with D23 last week visiting D17. Early morning was a little chilly but by late morning, I was fine in a skort, short sleeve top and long sleeve pullover. The pullover came on and off depending on where we were during the day. If the sun was out, it felt pretty warm (to me) even though the temp was only around 70. On Easter Sunday, I was sweating in a sundress while waiting in the sun for our table at George’s in La Jolla, but once seated in the shade, I needed a sweater. In the evenings, I wore pants with a lightweight long sleeve shirt - with a breeze, a jacket or sweater was necessary. We were mostly in coastal areas - La Jolla, PB, Mission Beach and Ocean Beach. Even though the temperature averaged around 70, we were able to go to the beach (did not swim) and ride bikes along the beachfront in shorts and a tank. We had a couple of mornings of “June gloom” but it burned off by late morning.

We lived in San Diego - well, Coronado - for three (lovely) years.

“May Gray” and “June Gloom” are accurate. The sea fog rolls in at night, and rolls out as the day progresses during those months. It lasts longer the closer to the ocean you are.

Also, micro climates are your life. On any given day, you will be inappropriately dressed for at least a few hours.

So, shorts will be perfect, in at least some areas of San Diego, for at least part of the day.

@Marilyn - it’s still too cool for me in the evening for shorts. I’m less than a mile from the beach, but I’m a wimp about the cool weather.

I am losing my Chicago tolerances…

I have lived in La Jolla for most of my life, other than an East Coast stint for college. It’s still cool here. Nice in the sunshine, but a cool breeze blowing. Mornings and evenings require a light sweater and jeans. But, like has been mentioned above, a couple miles inland and it’s much warmer during the day.

Thanks so much, all! I guess I’ll be bringing more long pants/jeans than originally planned. A couple more jackets. Need to be prepared!
