An admissions counselor there said that the drama program is so over-enrolled, that Freshman are lucky to score one drama class their first year on campus. Could this be true? Is this a problem worth checking at other BA drama programs at big schools?

Yes, this could be true and is the main reason my daughter was not interested in a public school. However, if you do the preliminary research, get you name on all of the available waiting lists, and sign up for things you need promptly it is entirely possible to navigate your way into the education you are seeking. It’s just not easy. But it is possible.

The program may be over-enrolled but budget cuts are the main reason freshmen have trouble getting the classes they need, not just in Drama but in most departments. And while other state schools may have the same problem, the California public schools are an extreme case.
