I’m from Brazil and I’ll be applying to American universities for the Fall of 2019 semester. I took the SAT twice and my grades were nothing special (1320 and 1400). I’ll be applying to Notre Dame, Johns Hopkins and Georgetown as reaches and I heard they don’t expect international students’ grades to be as high as Americans’ because of the language difference but I don’t know if that’s true. I also don’t expect to get my SAT grades any higher considering I’ve done dozens of practice tests and I’m always in the 1400 range. Should I try again or send my 1400 scores?
It’s not true. If anything, the expectation an international applicants score will be higher as the competition is more fierce.
Additionally, language skills do not come into play for the math section. And universities in the US have an expectation that all students will be able to communicate in the English language, since that is the language of instruction.
Sorry, but you don’t get a pass simply because your first language is (presumably) Portuguese.
Agree, your information is incorrect. There is no allowance for language skills in the SATs or grades – you are applying to go to a college being taught in English so your English skills need to be up to par with everyone else who attends the college. In addition, as noted above competition is fierce for internationals applying to US colleges, especially internationals needing financial aid, so average grades and SATs below the college’s average won’t get you in.
If Johns Hopkins is what you’re aiming, I would probably suggest you taking the SAT one more time to see if you can increase your scores. I myself got a 1400 but none of the colleges on my list are too selective.
I have actually met during this year a girl from Brazil who is currently at JHU. As I remember she had smth like 1450 in SAT(with 800 in math, she is CS major). So, improving would be better
