SAT scores for UK student

Hi all

I’m planning on coming to a US college after A-Levels. Just got my results back from the Jan 28 SAT and I got a 2280. Wondering whether that’s good enough for most colleges, specifically Harvard/MIT/Stanford, or whether I should do them again?

Thanks

First of all: Congratulations! A 2280 is a fantastic score! :D

I suggest you research the middle 50% of SAT scores for the schools you are looking at… That should show you where you lie compared to other (accepted) applicants.

What’s the breakdown of your score? What are you applying to?

Thanks very much for your reply.

I got 800 in writing, 750 CR, 730 math. Big surprise for me as I thought I was stronger at math than anything else but anyway…

Planning on applying to Harvard, MIT, Yale, Princeton and Stanford as my top 5. Really want to pursue economics/business and computer science, ideally as double-majors (though I know Harvard doesn’t allow that).

Think my math is too low for MIT but happy to be corrected!

Thanks.

Try using this website:
[College Search - Find colleges and universities by major, location, type, more.](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

It will be very useful for you.

Type a college you are interested in into the College QuickFinder. For instance, “Stanford.”

Then click the orange tab that says “SAT, AP, CLEP”
This will bring you to a list of the middle 50%. Like so:

Middle 50% of First-Year Students Percent Who Submitted Scores
SAT Critical Reading: 670 - 770 87%
SAT Math: 690 - 780 87%
SAT Writing: 680 - 780 87%

Based on these scores, you have a great chance of being accepted to Stanford (of course there are more criteria to consider…)!!

Thanks very much!

You’re welcome. Best of luck to you!!

Math is pretty low for either a MIT or Cal Tech but otherwise you are in the mix for your other top schools. Well done, you.

Do you know what your predicted A levels are? How many are you taking and in which subjects? Remember that extra curricular and personal essays matter A LOT in American applications. The essays are NOT the same as true essays for Oxbridge and you should have an advisor who knows American college to read your essays to make sure you have the touch at American Ad Coms will like.

They are not looking for swots (well unless you have a chance to be the American equivalent of a starred First) but a class with a variety of interests, experiences and talents who are also quite clever.

Well done on your SAT score. Remember when applying that the colleges are highly selective and even people with a GPA of 4.0 and a 2400 on the SAT don’t get accepted. Maybe it would be a good idea to have a ‘‘safety school.’’ Also you might find College P.rowler useful, it gives you a student review of the college you want to apply for as well as information like the admitted students SAT/ACT scores where you could attempt to match your score to theirs. For some reason it won’t let me post the link to College P.rowler (minus the ‘.’) but if you search it in google it won’t be too difficult to find.
