Saturday to Baltimore??

OK…didn’t want to hijack another travel thread. I’m supposed to fly to Baltimore on Saturday morning from Hartford…Southwest…departing 9:20 a.m. Anyone want to weigh in on whether this is really going to happen?

My guess is yes. When there have been flight disruptions the people who have flights scheduled after the disruption (assuming the runways have been plowed) usually have fewer problems than those who have to be rescheduled. They don’t bump people who are already booked to accommodate those who have been inconvenienced already. The flight will probably be filled to capacity, but I would guess it will happen.

There is no more snow predicted before then. You should be fine. I was supposed to fly into BWI Sunday and by Monday afternoon it was clear enough to land flights, with more snow than this round.

You’ll leave on time.

What’s the occasion??

Sisters in law bonding experience

thumper you will probably get to Baltimore but what will you doooooooo once you get there?
They are under a snow emergency in MD that will probably last for a couple of days.

She will bond. With her sister-in-law. What better bonding than being stuck indoors together?

As long as you already have your flight booked, I don’t see a problem. It’s the people whose flights were cancelled and who have to re-book who are going to wait for days to get where they’re going.

But when are you traveling back? There may be another snowstorm in Maryland on Monday.

They ran this graphic on DC channel 9 this am. BWI has received more snow than either Rochester or Syracuse thus far this Winter.

The other issue is your SIL’s location relative to the airport, and the kind of vehicle you’ll have. Last weekend’s storm dumped more snow; still, our country road was plowed soon. This time around we’ve had white-out and high winds, so even snow plows were being pulled from the roads yesterday. Today’s winds also are very high. Some of the back roads may be plowed only to see them drift over quickly. Some plows are being diverted to support power restoration. Utility crews need to be able to get to downed lines to restore them, so this takes priority.

Right - the roads down there are horrendous. I don’t know what they had in mind for bonding… if sitting by the fire with some good food and a bottle of wine - then maybe.
If actually doing anything in or around Baltimore is in the plans - ugh.

According to the Baltimore Sun there are now 2 runways open at BWI - most mass transit is not running. No guarantees about tomorrow, it could still be ugly on Saturday.

From SWA website:
We have made adjustments of our scheduled service to/from BWI as follows:

● cancelled all of our flights on Wednesday (February 10)

● cancelled the majority of our flights on Thursday (February 11)

Our ability to resume scheduled service is contingent upon the conditions of the runways, taxiways, and other airport services.

Fortunately - if thumper needs to reschedule SWA will allow that. You picked the right airline for the wrong weekend!

The operative word is “maybe”. I hear the good food at the stores has run pretty low (trucks not getting through). If my own house is any indication, her beer and wine supply may not be holding up too well either.

Crackers and snow melt?

We’re going to relax…if I get there at all. The folks there are able to get to BWI to retrieve me IF I get to BWI. They all have plenty of food and…

If my flight is canceled, I will NOT be rescheduling for this weekend…I’m supposed to fly back here on Tuesday…flying down there on Sunday to come back on Tuesday just won’t work for me.

Oh well…we’ll just have to wait and see.

thumper, my sister is flying from Hartford via Dulles to LAX tomorrow. I’ll let you know how it works. My only concern for her was that the connection is a little tight. If you are late catching a flight and there are lots of people who had been bumped it is more likely they will snag your seat!

BWI has reopened but some flights are still getting cancelled. Things should be improved by Saturday:

[Airports reopen after paralyzing blizzard - USATODAY.com](http://www.usatoday.com/travel/flights/2010-02-10-weather_N.htm)

I j ust signed up for SW’s messaging service. They will send me email updates starting four hours before my departure time. Their website says they “plan” to resume normal flight operations into BWI on Friday.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

But I’m also thinking I should pack some decent appetizers and check my baggage so we’ll have something to eat in MD.

good luck, thumper. I have used their text messaging and it’s pretty slick.

Just so you know - if you have to cancel the weekend, you won’t lose your $$. They will keep it as a credit for you to use at a future date.

I’m picking up my MIL Friday at BWI and leaving from there myself on Saturday. I’ll let you know how Friday goes but I think it will all be fine. 24 hours, and a sunny day, can work wonders on the roads and shopping around here.

You won’t see snow in Baltimore. You’ll see snaow.

Whoever helps you through, just say, “Thanks, hon.” You’ll fit right in.

Happy bonding with the SIL’s. (I assume sister-in-law rather than son-in-law there.) Bring real maple syrup, heat it and pour it in long, thin strands onto the snow; let it harden. It makes good candy in Canada. They’ll be impressed  I guess you have to staow the syrup under the plane in baggage, since it’s liquid.

Some neighborhoods are still buried but businesses and restaurants are opening and people are getting around. I shopped at Wegman’s right before the snow started and there was plenty of great food. We got a lot of snow but we didn’t turn into a third world country. What area will you be in - city, county, which county?
