I really can’t understand how it took that long if the glove has been there for 11 days.
It seems very chaotic. I’m not law enforcement but requests are all over. From foxnews. I also find it interesting, others by now, the case would be closed. I can’t imagine, if alive, what Ms Guthrie is going through. I can’t imagine being her family.
But yeah if less profile, it seems like this would have maybe passed or had less resources by now.
I also think Mr Trump saying we are close couldn’t help the family.
I’m fearful she’s gone which I wonder if they do too hence checking the nearby brush etc.
From Fox
Authorities investigating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie have asked neighbors to share any surveillance footage dating to two specific timeframes, neighbors told KVOA.
Authorities are requesting footage from Jan. 11 between 9 p.m. and midnight, which dates to three weeks before Guthrie disappeared. Police are also requesting footage from January 31st between 9:30 and 11 a.m.
Authorities urged local residents to check their footage before it is overwritten.
“We are very worried. The neighbors are all worried, and we do not know who this kidnapper is, what he’s done with Nancy Guthrie," Marla Handler, a neighbor, told KVOA. “We don’t know what’s going on, so we’re really concerned.”
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI say they have received nearly 18,000 tip calls since Guthrie disappeared. The sheriff’s department received 4,000 calls on Wednesday alone.
The FBI is urging anyone with information related to Guthrie’s disappearance to contact 1-800-CALL-FBI.
Some have already turned over security camera footage. Spousal Unit knows somebody whose family member lives on Nancy Guthrie’s street and that person handed over footage to law enforcement several days ago.
I suspect that the glove could have been planted there by someone completely unrelated to the case - people do really strange things for reasons difficult to understand. It’s just too coincidental, IMO, that it was suddenly found by the side of the road.
If I lived in that area, I’d be worried. There doesn’t seem to be anything pointing to this being anything but random … of course, it could be targeted, but in the absence of any information stating otherwise, I would be afraid that it could happen again. That’s just my take.
I do worry that this case will encourage more parent-napping. And since the story is so prominent, there might be parents becoming paranoid too. If Fox News is fixating on this story, I have a fragile friend in nursing home who will be fretting - there was a point she was absolutely convince the 3rd shift staff was cooking drugs in the hallway (she was seeing the glow of Exit sign).
Sidebar / comic relief - I tried to think about how my own kids would react if their parents were taken. Actually had a chuckle recalling the “Ransom of Red Chief” story by O. Henry.
Or the movie Ruthless People!
One of the retired FBI consultants mentioned this is not unusual for criminals to discard parts of their criminal “get up” or whatever term he used over a distance here and there….not wanting to get caught with the items in the vehicle they are traveling in. The glove was 1.4 miles away from the home. It could still be a plant by a random person just wanting to be part of the criminal act or it could be the real glove used in the crime. I would guess either way, if used, it would have some DNA on the inside, and the outside.
I said many posts ago that the sheriff should have have ‘turned the property’ back to the family and let media onto the property. Now they don’t know if something was dropped by the kidnappers or a neighborhood kid or the media. I wish the FBI or Texas Rangers had been brought in sooner.
An Arizona sheriff is blocking FBI access to key evidence in the investigation into the abduction of U.S. television journalist Savannah Guthrie’s mother, impairing its ability to assist in the probe, a U.S. law enforcement official with knowledge of the case told Reuters on Thursday
The Pima County sheriff has primary jurisdiction over the case, and FBI assistance must be officially requested by the county, otherwise the FBI is legally precluded from taking part in the investigation. The official said the county has spent some $200,000 so far to send evidence in the Guthrie case to the the Florida lab.
Something seem off here?
Is he a control freak, a limelight seeker, a … what? It makes no sense. There is no political agenda in this case, and the FBI folks who process crime scenes and test evidence are going to do their jobs. Does the sheriff watch too many crime shows, where the locals and the feds are always at odds? I mean, a woman’s life is (hopefully, still is) at stake here. He should be welcoming assistance.
The sheriff responded that this is untrue. All evidence collected so far has been sent to the Florida lab, he questioned the sense of sending just the glove to a different lab and it was agreed it made more sense to keep it with the other collected evidence. Not sure why an anonymous person close to the investigation feels the need to speak to the press about it.
I do think the FBI seeks the limelight. They were put on the clock by Mr. Trump who said they’d resolve soon and they’ve yet to solve.
Everyone today wants credit, wants a press opportunity, at the top level.
The rank and file of the FBI are feeling completely cut off at the knees by the head of the agency. (No names, this is not a political post). But the constant preening for the press, needing to wear a “tough guy” jacket with patches he did not earn out in the field, the misuse of Bureau resources, and posturing for the president instead of following protocol has them burnt out, angry and disheartened. That’s why you’ve got leaks.
Since when does a president make pronouncements from the oval office about a private citizen’s kidnapping? Field agents, hostage negotiators, division leadership have had years of training for not just solving crimes but for making sure that the case is rock solid so the prosecutors can get a conviction. Not just announcing to the press “we’ve found XYZ” evidence- but making sure nothing is contaminated, the chain of custody is intact, and that “need to know” is being maintained, even in cases where the public’s help is required.
There will be more leaks to come. And next time it won’t be a domestic kidnapping of a private citizen- remember Daniel Pearl and the global manhunt (until that tragic and horrific video of his beheading was released)? Some of the agents in the field have worked for decades– often in personally dangerous situations- to learn how to navigate these investigations. Now they’ve got a media personality running off his mouth…. so there are leaks.
The sheriff, a Democrat, has some controversy around his elections. Could be other reasons for anonymous criticism.
Honestly, this seems like a mess. Very sad and frustrating for the family.
There are parts of the greater Tucson area which have a Tucson mailing address, but are not in the jurisdiction of Tucson Police Department…such locations, when it comes to law enforcement, are in Pima County Sheriff’s dept jurisdiction. Guthrie’s home is probably located outside of TPD.
We had a very sad missing woman situation in our state recently, and search teams were combing areas around the scene almost immediately - and they didn’t stop until the woman was finally found. It just seems so weird to me that a thorough search of the surrounding areas didn’t happen until so many days later in this case.
Lots of activity last night with zero results - another big nothing burger.
And they knew from the beginning that Nancy Guthrie was taken against her will (so a crime) and not just a senior who wandered away. They should have called in more help immediately and combed every inch of the neighborhood. The mistakes added up quickly.
