SCAD for Production Design?

We are trying to finalize my daughter’s list. As you may remember, she’s a techie who is highly passionate about theatre but not so much about other academics. Her GPA will probably end in the 3.0-3.3 ish range with no AP classes but some “advanced” classes. Test scores are horrendous, and she has an active 504. I say all this because the merit type scholarships are probably out of reach for her. We live in Georgia, so our choices of “good/really good” theatre schools are quite limited.

We looked at SCAD off and on for a while, but it has come back up again. I know the Performing Arts department is fairly new, but does anyone know about the Production and Design department?

Thanks,
Melanie

Well…lots of views and no responses. Hmmm…that may say all that needs to be said. I’m not surprised, really. I’ve been to the SCAD website and can find nothing about the productions they do, etc. I’m thinking we may visit and gain a bit more information about the program. At this point, though, it looks like a no for applying.

It is a horrible idea. There are decades of Production Designers who have no such degree. It’s basically a scam by the university. (as most degrees have turned into) Most Production Designers have degrees in other various things. Some theatre, architecture, or other various design degree. Nothing anywhere near the cost of a SCAD tuition however. Many never even went to school for anything related and started in an entry level position in the Art Department. Which is exactly where someone even with a high priced SCAD degree will end up. Years upon years of working their way up the ladder. Then at some point will need to join the union which for production designers costs thousands of dollars. They would be better off never going to college and start working as a PA straight out of high school. They would have just as good a chance with no debt or money paid into a degree as someone who did and be much better off because they could have bought a house.
