To anyone who got invited to the GAP, how long after receiving the letter did you get the email with the invite? In the letter it said a few days, but it’s already been a week for me. Also, how long after acceptance did you hear about scholarhips (I applied early October and got acceptance mid December, and GAP invite 2 days later)

My daughter was under your situation last year, give you some perspectives:
Applied 10/07/2012, Accepted 11/08/2012, GAP invitation email 12/04/2012, Chancellor application 12/22/2012, got declined email GAP-medical 2/4/2013, Received chancellor interview letter 02/18/2013, Interviewed 03/18/2013 and rejected one week or so afterward. It’s a long process.

Structural please forgive me if I am overstepping my boundaries- I am just trying to figure this out. Did your daughter receive any merit aid after she was rejected from Chancellor?

Yes twogirls, she got free tuition from Pitt, although we were disappointed of not getting Chancellor, but it was not unexpected, I heard only 14 or so finally got it, and it’s not totally depends on your stats. Pitt also provided $500 travel expenses for interview. The Honors Day presentations were impressive; she likes the honors dorm and campus, but decided to join Rutgers for a full ride.

Structural are you in state or OOS? My daughter meets the criteria for merit aid: top 1%, 1450+/CR+M, A+ average, leadership, etc but I understand that this does not guarantee merit aid. She needs about $12,000-13,000 for the school to be affordable. We are from NY ( this is probably a negative).

Full ride @ Rutgers would likely mean they are NJ residents so OOS for Pitt. Twogirls - your dd is a jr correct? I have 2 at Pitt right now (fr. and jr.) and with the stats described you would most likely receive anywhere from $10K to full tuition but over the last few yrs, yes, it’s gotten more competitive with those getting full-tuition to Chancellor’s invites being ivy-league material. It is worth a try for your dd to submit the app early next fall and see how it ends up. With the stats you describe, she will likely have a number of choices with varying levels of merit and hopefully Pitt would be one of them.

^ thank you for the info. She is planning to work on the essays this summer and the common app as soon as it opens. Our intention is to get the apps in very early. Thanks again!!

Hey guys! I am OOS and would like to attend Pitt if it is affordable. Do I have any chance merit aid? Here is my story/stats:

Submitted Pitt Prestige app in early November.

Recieved acceptence to Swanson engineering (Environmental) and UHC acceptance about a month later (December?)

Recieved acceptance to accelerated masters program in engineering about a week later.

About two weeks after acceptance to pitt, I sent all of my supplemental info (2 recs, personal essay, resume) do you think they will consider this even though I sent it after my acceptance? I sent it for merit consideration because the pitt prestige app was very brief.

Stats: 3.96 gpa

4.65 (weighted)

Top 5%

Will complete 8 AP classes by senior year, 2 duel enrollment

SAT: 680 CR/ 640 M/ 770 W
(Yes, I know 1330 is low for UHC and accelerated programs, so I was shocked)

ACT: 29
33 W/ 29 E/ 27 S/ 31 M

I am a white female from MD.
All of my supplemental items are really glowing, so I really hope they are read.

Hook? I’m not sure, maybe that I want to be an engineer and I am a woman. Or that I am an athlete (and have won a few state championships). Or I also won an international service award.

Do I have a chance at aid?? That is the only way I would be able to attend Pitt!! Thanks in advance!!!

I also hear that scholarships at Pitt are really random. So that’s why I think I might have a shot
but I also hear that they’re primarily based on numbers, and that does not work in my favor due to my lower test scores…

My daughter got an acceptance letter into the nursing school back in November but no word about merit/scholarship money. Does Pitt mail a letter later in 2014? She is from CT with a 2220 and 3.7 GPA and attends a very competitive high school. We were impressed with the University of Pittsburgh nursing program but need merit money to make it more affordable to attend. Another Private University awarded my daughter a $24,000 scholarship renewable each year, a total of 8 semesters, or $96,000. This brings the cost down to the same as Pittsburgh without merit. Is it a good idea to call Pittsburgh?

@murphy1008 I would encourage you to call Pitt’s OAFA and just find out if your daughter is still being considered for scholarships. Her stats certainly seem high enough. Is she in the top 5% in her high school class? This link spells out the basic process.

savannahstar, from the Pitt website:

"In recent years, scholarship ELIGIBLE students possessed ALL of the following:
minimum SAT I score of 1450 (math and critical reading scores only) or 33 ACT composite score
overall A average
top 5% class rank (if applicable) while participating in challenging high school curriculums consisting of AP/IB/Honors courses
“of secondary consideration”: record of excellence in various academic and nonacademic activities outside of the classroom

They made an exception for you once to put you in honors with a low-ish SAT. Might they want another woman engineer so much as to offer you merit to get you? I hope you’ll let us know.

murphy, see my post above about scholarship criteria. It’s just real hard to tell if you’ll get much merit from Pitt. BTW, the only pitt apps who’ve heard anything about merit so far that have posted on CC are people either invited to the Chancellor’s Scholarship or offered full tuition. There’s been very little so far about scholarship offers, so settle in with the rest of us and we’ll see each other thru this wait.

Geez, TitanMom, way to cut the feet right out from underneath me ;+)

@jkeil911 – not quite sure what you mean, but no ill will intended on my part! I only wish the best for all of the cc’ers waiting to hear about merit dollars. We were BLESSED with our son getting full tuition and having him attend Pitt. If he were applying today (he was class of 2011) with the same stats he would probably not get the same scholarship as he had a 1420 SAT,32 ACT, top 5% of top 100 HS in NY. He’s in a six year program so he/we will be paying for the last two years (out of state tuition for the school of Pharmacy which today is 27k and sure to go up). No one is more grateful that he received full tuition for the first four years.
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE WAITING!!!

Do we hear about scholarships only via mail or are they on our portal also?

oh, TitanMom, I was only kidding you about your providing your response–one quite similar to mine–to murphy some 16 minutes before mine! No offense. No ill will. Just what happens when one (me) is writing and not monitoring if anyone else (you) has already said what one (me) is still writing. Glad to hear your S has done so well at Pitt.

The scholarship notices are only thru snail mail.

I called Admissions today to see if my S was “in the running” for Merit. We will not get any financial aid, so we are counting on merit to ease the financial burden. His Math/Reading was a 1430 (750 Math, 680 Reading) with an A average and the most difficult AP/Honors course load offered by his school in NY. They said he was still "under consideration), and will will be notified by March 1 if he will get any merit aid, so we will hang tight and await notification. (The counselor said only a very small number have been notified at this point.) He was offered a 17K per year merit scholarship from Northeastern and a 27k/year merit from PACE University (his “safe” school). Northeastern being a top rated school and ranked higher than PITT by most, only an offer of merit would tip the scales in PITT’s favor. As it stands, Northeastern would cost us $2k less per year and is a private university in Boston (another great city) with a great reputation and an internship program that ranks #1 in the country. I am hoping PITT offers him something - we really loved the school when we visited!

thanks for updating us on what admissions said about the timeline.

@Tyler’s Mom-- just curious what is you S planning on majoring in? Some majors at Pitt are higher ranked than Northeastern. My S (Pharmacy) was between Northeastern (got $10k) and Pitt and went with Pitt when he got full tuition. We are NY also and his SAT’s were almost identical to your son’s. You are fortunate to know what he’s getting from NEU already, as we didn’t have that until April. Also some other things to consider-- does he like D1 sports? If yes, then Pitt would have that all over Northeastern. My S was a soccer player and plays intramurals at Pitt, but loves going to Football and basketball games. Also, Boston is a much more expensive City so the $2k may disappear especially when they move off campus.
Pitt may be “public” but receives less than 10% of it’s budget from PA. It’s not like SUNY schools that are funded at much higher rates. Don’t get me wrong, we have friends kids who love NEU and it’s a great school. Just food for thought when comparing the two.
