I am an incoming senior in the IB Program and I was wondering how does one go about reviving scholarships from a particular school. Obviously, I will be applying to multiple school but some schools have mandated scholarships of which are “full rides” or other financial assistance for incoming students. I was just wondering if there was a way to apply to that specific scholarship or if the school itself(based on ones application) administered the scholarship themself.
Additionally, I am also looking for scholarships and aid but I am not having much luck due to the fact that lost of the scholarship opportunities are for sports or for individuals already enrolled in a university or graduate school. Does anyone know of where I can find viable scholarships, other than Scholarship.com because it has not helped me at all.
Outside scholarships are generally for small amounts and not renewable. Most aid will come from the school. Go the website of each school, click on financial aid, and read the requirements. Some are automatically awarded based on stats or FAFSA. Others require a separate application. It is all there for you to read.
Are you international? If so money is much less likely.
What is a “mandated scholarship which is a full ride”?
If you are a Florida resident…are you eligible for Bright Futures? Start there. Find out if you are eligible and at what amount.
We would need your SAT or ACT scores…and your GPA to give you better pointers on scholarships, and colleges at which you might be eligible for merit aid.
Do you have financial need also? What can your family pay per year for you to attend college?
“My weighted GPA is a 5.8, my unweighted is a 3.2 and my district GPA is a 3.8. I am in the top 10% of my graduating class, I am in the IB Program "
" 1300s on the new SAT … ACT scores … have not come in yet "
" am an incoming senior and Emory University is on the top of my list (along with University of Alabama, Auburn and UPenn). Obviously, UPenn is a stretch but my main goal is Emory.”
@GNJones17 Look at the websites for each school you are interested in. There should be information on merit aid (automatic or competitive) and another section for financial aid (“need”).
@thumper1 I did mean “receiving” not “reviving” and I also meant automatic merit. I apologize for the confusion. Additionally, I am pretty sure I am eligible for bright futures but I am not sure how much will be administered and I do not want to soley rely on that. My SAT was in the 1300s and because my ACT scores are not out yet I am not sure what I received. My weighed is a 5.8 unweighted 3.2 district GPA is a 3.8.
My family is willing to pay whatever the cost but I want to be considerate and I do not think it is reasonable to make them foot the bill. I do understand the expenses in college and I wold rather do what I can and get whatever financial need I am able to as opposed to just letting my parents pay it all off for me.
I don’t think there are any ACT scores that aren’t out yet. The latest ACT was June 11 and those scores should be out. Did you log in at ACT.org to “view scores”?
Bright Futures has two level (plus some funds for tech schools which is different and I don’t know much about). The higher level pays $103 per credit (about $3000 per year), the lower $77 (about $2300). The student MUST apply before graduating and must start using the funds within 2 yr of graduating, unless in the military or on a religious mission. Apply even if you plan on going OOS because if you return to Florida after one year, you can still use BF.
To answer OP’s original question, BF is separate application. Some schools in Florida do consider your application to the school to be an application for the scholarships those schools provide. If you go to a private school in Florida, you’d also be eligible for the Florida resident grant ($3000) and while there is a separate application, you will fill that out once you are accepted to the school (it’s just a page long to prove you are a resident).
You have to look at each school (instate and OOS) to determine if you have to apply to a scholarship to be considered. My daughter did not have to apply separately for her merit scholarship, but did have to apply to the department scholarship, and it was an early application (Jan) and required a video. If you are seeing “Presidential Scholarship” or “Dean’s Scholarship” on the webpages of the schools you are looking at, you need to find out if you need a separate application and what the process is. Look for other scholarships at the school (department, talent, alumni, OOS) and see if those need a separate application.
@Madison85 Only some of the June 11 ACT scores have been released. My son and my daughter’s friend, who took the test at the same location here in Central PA, haven’t received their scores yet.
@sybbie719 I am not sure what the district GPA i have to ask my school counselor .
For unweighted the scale is out of 4.0 and weighted there is no scale ur GPA can be as high as you want it to be depending on the classes you take and the points that they are worth
@twoinanddone wow thanks so much ! This was extra helpful. What would you say helped your children the lost during the whole admission process of you do not mind me asking ?
@Madison85 some ACT scores have not been released, the website says to check back periodically or wait until you have received the email with the notification; I have done both and my score is not available yet.
