Scholastic Art and Writing Awards: Novel

Hi, I have some questions about the novel category. I googled for guidelines. The length limit says between 3-5 chapters, (min 15 pages, max 50 pages).

I’m wondering how they want the submission pages to be spaced (font size, single/double spacing, margins). If the length of the novel exceeds 5 chapters / 50 pages, would I submit 5 consecutive chapters and omit the rest?

Also, would a novella compromising ~18,000-22,000 words count for this category?

Google manuscript submission guidelines. They’re usually pretty general for all places: double-spaced, 10-12pt font, 1 inch margins. I prefer to use a generic monospaced font, i.e. Courier.
What constitutes a novel or novella depends on the audience. If it’s adult, then the word count req. is higher. If it’s young adult or children’s, then the word count goes down, respectively.

^What?

Novellas are generally 17,500-45,000 words I believe (this is the definition on wiki, anyway).

There are many “serious” novellas - The Old Man and the Sea, The Death of Ivan Ilyich, etc. that have low word counts.

Can anyone who has prior submission experience clarify the novel Scholastic guidelines for me?

Well, there’s almighty Wikipedia for you.
Google is your friend; make some use of it. My point being, that depending on the audience, the word count generally shifts. This isn’t that difficult.

OP is appreciative of the help, I see.

You’re welcome.

^ How many seconds on Google did that take?

^^Wow, thank you OP and PlattsburghLoser, this sounds interesting, and we still have until March!:)

Sorry if I came across as unappreciative. I do appreciate the help. Yeah, I googled before I wiki’ed, but for some reason my computer errors when I try to read the PDF.

I was under the impression that Scholastic Art and Writing awards has one general guideline for all novel submissions. I guess there are different guidelines depending on the audience? My computer is only able to read the part where it says 5 chapters / 50 pages (max).

Also, for those who have entered:

Did you submit 5 consecutive chapters or separated chapters? I feel that it would be stronger if I were to pick 5 chapters from certain areas in the novel that I want to highlight. Does Scholastic have any problems with this?

“Did you submit 5 consecutive chapters or separated chapters? I feel that it would be stronger if I were to pick 5 chapters from certain areas in the novel that I want to highlight. Does Scholastic have any problems with this?”

Same question.
I can’t find it on google. = =
