School in the 2020-2021 Academic Year & Coronavirus (Part 1)

the CDC reports the chance for hospitalization for this age group was less than 2 per 100,000. so yes, I would call that microscopic.

What’s the chance for hospitalization for that age group, given they’re infected?

It’s my understanding that delivery services in our area are pretty much a mess right now.

Perhaps you could address that inadequacy with your township. Our grocery stores offer free delivery for the elderly, and special store hours if they wish to shop in person. There are also volunteer shoppers from churches ready to assist.

Do not forget that sometimes students have underlying conditions. In some cases young adults even do not know about them… Living in very cramped area and sitting 200 students in one auditorium will definitely make someone sick quickly in case of outbreak. When several students in the hospital, you get outbreak in the community in no time.

@momsearceng – If students return to college and (at least some) in person classes I think they will also have the option for students to zoom in. They will need to do this anyway for, for example, international students who can’t physically return and for students who test positive and are quarantined (many of whom will likely feel fine and can continue their classes). Any student who has an underlying condition can choose whether or not to assume the risk to attend in person. I don’t think colleges should make everyone be remote b/c some students are more at risk.

On an upside hopefully teens and college kids will stop vaping. All evidence points to the fact that this will seriously increase their risk for a bad outcome with Covid19. That includes any kind of smoking. Hopefully the youth will be smart enough to control this underlying condition.

Not in this economy!

Key words…”right now”. But we’re not talking about right now. We’re talking about FALL. And we’re talking about a scenario where things have opened up enough that residential colleges have some ability to have students back in the dorms IN THE FALL.

This is where we seem to keep getting hung up. Some people are debating opening in the fall, on the assumption that there will be no progress at all between now and then.

First off… School is going to be only online or a hybrid for this fall. There will be not one school that will be 100% normal as we all know it. So if you don’t want Tommy or Lisa to go through this then pull them and do a gap year but hybrid schooling is here to stay in some form going forward.

For everyone that doesn’t think “kids” get sick is just plain wrong. What your missing is kids in clusters (, dorms). Sure now they aren’t getting sick since they aren’t 4 to a small room right on top of each other sharing the same kitchen, bathroom and dens or living spaces. Once that happens you will see maybe mostly kids getting the Covid “Cold” ((I just coined it so I want the credit ?®️). Some unfortunately will get a more severe sickness. Yes the Covid Flu (can I coin that? ?).

Also… Note Adult description coming… Your kids aren’t kissing and having sex with everything that moves right now either… (sorry).

Kids will get sick. Just to say send your kids and nothing will happen since only 1% or whatever kids get sick is silly. What if that 1% is your kid?

Parents have to really hone in the seriousness of what this covid can really do. There won’t be a 100% vaccine in the fall. People in power are trying to fast track a cure. It won’t happen. Too dangerous. We don’t want politics to get in the way or a really cure or real vaccine.

So I really don’t know how dorms lessen the amount of students in their dorms. No clue. Where do you put them.

But if every student from sophomore to Senior “HAS” to live off campus this would help greatly. Limit kids in the cafeteria and suggest box lunches to go. Especially on nice days ?.

Masks are mandatory. I am sure schools will have branded masks. They can just give them out.

Use virtual professors, classes, help sessions, advisory, etc when you can.

And if course wash your hands and don’t touch your face!

I am pretty sure at least one of my kid’s colleges will be very close to back to normal, but we will all see in just a few months, right? Plenty of summer camps and residential programs opening here this summer, so we will have some more data soon.

@Knowsstuff what is the point of paying for room and board if the kids might be still having virtual classes? If S19 was living off campus, then I get it. We would likely send him back.

I think a lot of universities are going to have kids come back to dorms because they need the money. They will make promises that there are plans for social distancing. And then they will resort to online but let kids stay. That way, they get their room and board income. Already, you see a lot of presidents out there saying class will be on campus but “hybrid”. Kids just see “on campus”. Yea! Not sure they get that they might be holed up in their room staring at their screens again. We won’t know how it will work out until they are there.

So, you are correct. If a student isn’t up for a crazy ride, they should take a break

I understand that they want money, but what will an outbreak cost?

It’s not just the students; it’s the faculty/staff. As much as we prefer to teach in person, some of us are at high risk or live with family members who are at risk. Sorry, but teaching in person is not “essential.” Which stinks, for both students and faculty.

@homerdog. It’s going to be some sort of hybrid or totally online. It’s tough no doubt. But here is my take even “if” I had a freshman. This is “their” new reality. Do they dare share this experience with others is the big question?

So let’s just hypothesize that school starts in a hybrid form. (Yes I know Wayne State and Michigan State “said” "they will be online for fall).

Let’s just say it goes better than now since there has been some experience and testing at this stage. Let’s say, heh, not to bad and there are other ways that freshman are connecting. Now their putting this on social media. Someone’s gap or stay at home kid is reading it and now having regrets. Come winter, things are more back to normal with some modifications to the hybrid learning (figuring out what is really working and what is not) .

This has nothing to do with a Lac or Public
You know I have one of each. Once again, the way Michigan teaches VS Bowdoin won’t change. Kids will get an education worthy of their institution. Yes, it will just look different.

I was laughing the other day since I am seeing an uptick of advertising for MBA programs being online. As you know, some are extremely expensive then you have like UIUC that changed to just online MBAs at a pretty affordable price but they attract so many more students also.

So at Michigan now and will take the kid home tommorow. Yep, get to sleep once again in the roommates room that is not here. Ha. He better not come back tonight… Lol… I asked my son once they switch to online learning, did he still learn or did it suffer in some way. Except for the first few days he really didn’t see a difference whether he attended class live or not. He could get in contact with his professor directly if needed. He had a meeting with his advisor and work groups on campus. Nothing was extremely different except he didn’t have to walk to class and back and in-between. Being isolated and hybernating, yep… He gained some weight. Has to get out walking daily etc. His finals that were supposed to be tough still were. No easy grade or easy pass fail. He said he will unlock all his grades instead of taking a pass /fail (this is a good sign things went well ?).

So it “might” not be all doom and gloom on campus in the fall.

Maybe, just maybe, Michigan will virtually beat Ohio State in Football. ?.. Lol.

But 19 year old males have an average death rate of 0.1% per year per the SSA (https://www.ssa.gov/oact/STATS/table4c6.html). Does that make you keep them locked up in your house year round? Do you forbid them from driving because ~10% of those deaths are from driving (https://www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/teen_drivers/teendrivers_factsheet.html)? That would be roughly equivalent to forbidding them from going to college because of the risk (to them) from coronavirus.

Treat this seriously, but also understand the probabilities. And remember this is not about the risk to them, it is about deciding how best to protect others who may be at greater risk.

Except there is no guarantee that Fall '21 will be any better (absent a vaccine that is widely disseminated).

@Knowsstuff You had me until the last line! ?

So I just don’t see an issue with a virtual teacher. Same teacher. Same philosophy. Just projected up on a screen or something like that. Geez with mixed reality you can actually have a hologram teacher in the room.

Students in smaller groups can still be in the room. All teaching are recorded for anyone to view so stay at home kids, internationals or… Well… Just don’t feel like leaving the apartment kids can watch the lectures
Something to be said about eating some cereal and watching your early class… Right?

Quality education will continue. It just will look dofre

I am not in disagreement with this and can just see both sides of the coin here. I think in the coming months we will just have better data to go by
This is still very early data. Trust me, I hope it stays this way or gets better.

Go Blue! ?. Lol. ?
