Looking for a non-Art school that’s a good fit for someone with 32 ACT and an interest in illustration/animation/game design/writing. Preferably east of the Mississippi, not extremely rural. Thanks!
My D’s friend was looking for something similar and her top two schools were NYU (Tisch) and USC. (She went to NYU and was very happy).
Post this question in the college search and selection forum. You need to give us a better idea of her desires: geography, urban v rural, Big Sate U v Small LAC, and so on.
If she is interested in a small school, Hampshire College might be a possibility. They won’t care about the ACT though as they don’t use test scores for admission.
Details please. Big or small? What are her grades? Conservative or liberal? Greek, no Greek? Sporty, not sporty. Etc…
My DD is very similar. She is attending UT Dallas majoring in CS but is also taking classes in Art and Technology, business and fine arts. UTD has both an animation and gaming program. Flexibility in taking classes in multiple areas is one of the reasons we choose UTD. Many of the public schools we looked at did not allow this crossover. They also have great scholarships.
Honestly almost any medium to large research university will offer what she is looking for. A million years ago I was a kid who liked math and art and had good grades and scores, but I didn’t know what direction I wanted to go except not art school. I ended up majoring in Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard and went to grad school in architecture. It was a tiny major in a big school - I got to know all my professors and worked on a senior thesis with two of them.
It would be a reach, but she might like to look at Carnegie Mellon - the CS department requires a minor and they have a terrific art department. Their http://ideate.cmu.edu/ program sounds perfect for her.
She is homeschooled, has a 4.0 GPA, not into the Greek thing. Would lean more conservative than liberal. Would prefer not to be in a tiny school, but size is otherwise not a factor. She liked her visits to Grove City and to Carnegie Mellon, and really liked the city atmosphere of Pittsburgh in general.
We did visit CMU and she liked it…we are trying to set up a more in-depth visit of their art dept., I just know we can’t count on her being accepted there!
I will look into UT Dallas. She would prefer to be a little closer to northeast Ohio…say within about an 8 hour drive.
Drexel University has a Game design program: http://replay.drexel.edu/ you can get your degree from the CS perspective or the Design School perspective and they cross paths somewhat.
RIT? They have many unique majors that may be of interest.
Carnegie is a reach for most, especially with a 32 ACT.
4.0 homeschool doesn’t mean much without more context. Any dual enrollment courses?
Some options: http://www.gamedesigning.org/schools/ohio/
OSU and Kent State should be good options.
Rochester Institite of Technology has excellent art programs and game design, I have a nephew there in game design who loves RIT, definitely worthy of consideration.
Any AP test scores? Often times colleges like to see those with home-schooled kids.
Her ACT is good and her GPA is too, though I am not an expert on homeschooled kids and if colleges take online grades seriously. I suggest posting in the homeschool forum for a better idea about that.
Anyway, she should have some good choices. I did a search myself. I think most of these colleges will have a healthy mix of conservative and liberal students. For high reaches, consder Cornell and U Penn. Northeastern and UC Irvine (not east of Missisippi, of course ) would be a reach/high match. RPI, WPI, and SUNY Stony Brook could be matches. Low match/ safety schools could be Drexel and SCAD.
My daughter (a junior) just got her October ACT scores back and was happy to see a composite of 32 (e36,m27,r33,s32,writing10). She is mostly interested in animation and possibly game design, but wants the option to take courses outside of art, so she really doesn’t want to go to an art school. Any suggestions for places where she could focus on art but would find intellectual peers and other options? I’ve done a few searches and not had much luck so far. TIA.

Thanks all! She will have an AP English Language score & plans to take SAT2 math (prob. level 1) and SAT2 English at least this year. Not sure it’s worth taking the ACT again. We’lll know if she will take the SAT after she gets her PSAT scores back. Next year she should be taking some classes at our state university, but the grades won’t be in before she applies. We don’t do online high school, but traditional home school. Thanks for the suggestions. (and thanks for merging the threads Erin’s Dad!)
We did visit Kent but she did not like it at all. Checking into OSU & Akron too.
