I am helping my niece look for schools. Her gpa and test scores are very high. What are some schools in the 6,000 or under range that have a good drama department? They live in California but are considering schools on the East coast.

People interested in theatre come from diverse backgrounds. High school friend of D’s attended Harvard, her interest was in indy films and she presented as a student in Edinburgh.

Nother friend planned on double majoring in music & theatre , eventually realized @ Reed a double major is eztremely time consuming , went for theatre ( all theatre seniors present and write a stage production)
Moved to NYC , performed in Off broadway productions one of which earned him an Obie just a few years out of college, now in CA & grad school.

Couple other of ds friends went straight to LA as their interest were in television

An opportunity to broaden your base of knowledge and skills can be found at many colleges , just depends what her primary strenghts and weaknesses are.

She is interested in acting and singing. She would also like to possibly double major in Judaic studies, so that might limit her choices.

Also look at the musical theater board. Lots of good info there.

Is cost a concern?

yes, I will check there. No, cost is probably not a concern.

I would consider Brandeis. Intellectually challenging, right size, Boston, strong theatre department, probably good Judaic studies with its Jewish background. We toured it last spring and were very impressed.

USC is larger than the size you mentioned, but the theatre majors are a close knit group within a research university. Students often share classes at the fine Schools of Music and famous School of Cinematic Arts.

Hebrew Union College has a unique relationship with USC. Also, within USC College a student can major or minor in Judaic Studies or minor in Jewish American Studies.

Given those interests…look at Brandeis, Brown, Yale, Northwestern, and Tufts, among others.

(these suggestions are assuming she is seeking a BA and not a BFA)

thanks…some great suggestions. Keep them coming…

Although it might not occur to anyone on either coast to look at a school in the middle of the middle of the country, it’s worth looking at the School of Music, the Theatre Department, and the Jewish Studies Program at Indiana University in Bloomington. Here’s a link to the JSP:

[Robert A. and Sandra S. Borns Jewish Studies Program at Indiana University, Bloomington - IU](http://www.indiana.edu/~jsp/)

It’s surprisingly strong. IU’s Hillel is also one of the better ones in the country. My older son majored in bassoon performance at IU. (My younger son went to Brandeis.)

Hope this is helpful.
