Hi, I am currently a rising senior in Virginia, and along with most VA kids, I am applying to UVA.
It is not a reach school for me, but not a total match…(I’m pretty much right at their average acceptance gpa, test scores, etc) and of course many other factors go into play, but I wanted to broaden my scope to other schools, including out of state or private schools. What are some schools that are similar to UVA in terms of acceptance rates, average test scores, gpa, etc. that I could also have a good shot at getting into? Thanks in advance!

Direct your attn to this url and address the questions it raises. We need more info about you.

thank you, jkeil911, I understand would need to give out more information for me to ask if i had a chance to get into a school, but I just wanted more of a general answer regarding the schools. What are some colleges similar to UVA in regards to acceptance rates, average scores, gpa, etc. (disregarding myself if that makes it easier to answer). Thanks!

If you know you’re a match for UVA then put your stats in the Supermatch engine on the left of this page.

You have many excellent choices if you are instate. If you are considering UVA, definitely consider William and Mary, which has some of the most friendliest students around and top notch academics to boot.

I’m sure we could help you come with some other schools as well, but it depends what you are really interested in studying and perhaps some info about what your family can afford. (Some stats couldn’t hurt either)

Virginia resident here. My son liked UVA, but decided it was a little big for him. Schools we looked at that were a bit smaller, but similar in selective ness, scores, etc. were William and Mary, Wake Forest, and U of Richmond. I also think Vanderbilt had some similarities to UVA.

Vanderbilt is famously test-conscious.Does the OP have test scores that would get him into UVA from out-of-state? I don’t think anything under a 2100/32 SAT/ACT is very promising for Vanderbilt if you are not an athlete or legacy.

Well, you could look at the higher-ranked publics like UVa (Michigan, Berkeley, UT-Austin, W&M, etc.). Getting into to OOS top-ranked publics isn’t as easy as getting into UVa will be, though. What are your test scores?

@CE527M Even if he got into those, OOS prices would be pretty unreasonable. He might as well go to a private instead of those (unless there’s a top department he’s looking for).

Too many to name, why should we do the work for you? Use supermatch or some other stats search if you are unwilling to make it a personal search.

To me, UVA is kind of a state-private hybrid: they do some research and give some preference to in-staters, but they have an acceptance rate of which many quality private schools would be proud.

And for a flagship… it really isn’t a big school.

UW-Madison, by comparison, is heavy into research and strength of faculty/academics… but is not so tough in admissions.

(So UW lets in some kids who don’t really belong at an academically strong school, giving them a chance… but then you end up with a slew of dropouts.)

prezbucky, UW- Madison had a great retention rate of the freshman that entered in 2012. 95% of entering freshman returned for their sophomore year. That is excellent. UVa’s retention rate is excellent as well. For the UVa first years in 2011, 97.5% returned as second years. http://apir.wisc.edu/retention.htm

@prezbucky UVA does give off a private school vibe -specially with that endowment ($4.7 billion) and an 87% (kudos to that) four-year graduation rate. They meet 100% of need. Had I lived on the east coast, I would’ve definitely applied.

UVa and Wm & M have a long tradition of expecting students to graduate on time.

Have a look at the following:
*Johns Hopkins
*Georgetown
*Washington & Lee
*Vanderbilt
*Davidson
Lehigh
*Colgate
Bucknell
Rochester
Wake Forest
Lafayette
*Richmond
*Franklin & Marshall

Schools that claim to meet 100% of demonstrated financial need.

If you’re a VA resident, go to UVA if you get accepted.

^ Unless he…

Gets into HYPS with the necessary financial aid to attend
or

Prefers a smaller university or a LAC & it’s affordable
or

Falls in love with any other school (you know, that “this is where I’m meant to be at” feeling) & it’s affordable

But if none of those happen, UVA is great.
