The intellectual future of our country is being pulled away by the hour.

That will negatively impact our financial future.

I am so sorry to hear this.

Guessing this is being repeated all over. What terrible implications for a country that has been at the forefront of science and technology for so long. Hopefully these cuts do not end up being permanent, but even if so, being in place for 4 years will negatively affect so many people.

There was a similar article on PItt and I know my cousin at UNC said the same thing is happening in her lab.

I don’t know how this gets built back. You can’t just flip a switch and turn it on.

Maybe the lawsuits or constituents will get something done to mitigate this impending disaster.
I was reading something, don’t remember the source, but places like U of Alabama will be hard hit and it’s one of the state’s biggest employers.

UAB - because of the medical (NIH) cuts - not to mention cancer patients and others who hope to live long lives.

It’s appalling.

We have heard that all grant funded research is in jeopardy…including research that is underway as well as pending applications for research grants. One of our relatives works full time supervising and administering grant research. She probably won’t be working next year…she thinks.

This will affect a lot of professions.

So far, I have heard the same about Vanderbilt and Pitt. I haven’t verified, and I don’t know if the suspension of grad admission is limited to specific disciplines. I just know people who were considering Ph.D. programs at these schools.

If cuts to research and higher ed are allowed to be implemented, it will be devastating, even to universities most people would think could ride out fiscal crises.

I saw the extract below about UCSD as well with a headline about it freezing faculty hiring, but it’s a local San Diego paper requiring a subscription so I don’t have further info or a link to provide.

“ UCSD also projects that it could lose at least $150 million in annual funding from the National Institutes of Health”

My son is actively in the PhD application cycle and also has pending NSF and DOD fellowship applications this year. It is incredibly stressful as these students have geared their undergraduate lives toward this goal of going on to their PhD. Summer research instead of typical internships, etc. On the grad student boards there are many students that are finding themselves without a single offer at this point.

Lots of universities are holding back on providing acceptances while they sort through all of this. Others are going forward with invited prospective student visits but not sending out acceptances yet. And there are some that have already issued the acceptance letters but perhaps in fewer number than typical.
Its extremely challenging to figure out which ones may be stable sources of funding and which may not be. And whether the “guarantee 5 years of funding” as many of their websites say will actually be true if grants are clawed back or otherwise not awarded.

Students are required to make their decisions on which school they will attend by April 15th…which is not far away at all.

@Corinthian thank you for starting this thread. Any chance the subject could be changed as this is happening at a lot of universities.

Maybe “some programs are reducing grad admissions, rescinding acceptances, worried about research amid fed funding cuts”. OK…that’s too long…but YKWIM…

I’m so sorry. Students who are at or around your son’s stage are in a truly awful position.

Good idea. I edited the title to be more generic.

Heard yesterday about a MSTP student’s infectious disease research being put on hold at one of the Ivies.

I have to reach out to a friend about his daughter that is in her PhD program. My daughter just talked with a professor about her field needing more PHDs. She’s just in her first year master’s. This is going to change the landscape for many profession.

We’re surrounded by people impacted. My daughter’s roommate works for NIH. We know tons in or applying to PhD programs. It’s everywhere. PhD offers are being rescinded - lots are sitting with no offers or have no idea if they will have funding past this semester. These are the same kids who’s high school and early college was impacted by Covid. I just really feel for them. It’s both personally appalling and strategically a disaster for our country long term.

I’m curious if these grad admissions cuts will impact undergrad RD decisions. There may be fewer TAs and grad students to support undergrad professors. Will more full-pay students be accepted to T20 schools?

Probably true, but like everything else, it could take a while for those impacts to become visible. My D is a 4th year PhD student and has satisfied the “mandatory TA” requirement for her stipend, but has continued to work as a head TA for a large undergrad intro class. She does it for extra money to supplement her stipend and it’s a huge amount of time and work. She won’t be doing it next year if there aren’t funds to pay her. And the pipeline of incoming PhD students behind her will be shrinking.
