I want to do be able to learn and perform traditional Drama (Contemporary as well as the classics esp.Shakespear but I also love doing MT - Please advise of colleges that would provide me the opportunity to act and sing.

oops. that should be opportunities!

Although, “opportunies” does have a nice ring to it, for musical types!

absolutely!!!

UArts offers a BFA in Acting which can be combined with a minor in MT. Acting majors, regardless of whether they take the MT minor, can audition for all the musicals.

Oklahoma City University ,OCU,has great MT and an up and coming drama major (BFA)

It might be tough to get any big parts due to the competition, but you can audition for musicals as a drama major. I recall nonMTs getting cast. I was always trying to get my d to do it, but she never would.

UArts owns the historic Merriam Theater, and their students get to produce a play or musical there every year.

The Merriam is a wonderful resource for the school and students. It is an 1800 seat “old world” proscenium theatre, with a full orchestra pit, that is regularly used for a variety of professional productions. Students who perform on that stage are in for a tremendous experience. One of the recent school productions at the Merriam was On Your Toes, done as a collaboration between the Schools of Theatre, Dance and Music. The size of the theatre allowed for not only the large cast of principals and supporting roles but also for a corps de ballet and a full pit orchestra, all filled by students.

UNCSA has a BFA acting program in which the students are required to take both singing and dance, and they occasionally do musicals. there is no MT program so the acting kids get a chance to really participate in the musicals :)

At my pace audition, the acting department head said that BFA acting majors have to take dance & movement classes (I’m not sure to what extent though)

Also at my USC audition they said the same thing regarding their BFA acting major. They also have a BA theater arts which you could either add their MT minor to (you can’t add it to their BFA though) or just take voice and movement classes for your “electives”.

Oh & university of Arizona BFA acting majors are allowed to audition for all the musicals even though their is a BFA in MT

Coastal Carolina University - all the BFAs (Acting, Physical Theatre and MT) are required to audition for all the shows at the general auditions. And there is lots of cross casting of majors. My D is an MT major and was in a musical and a straight play both her freshman and sophomore years. They do a 7 show season, with 2 of the shows co-produced with Atlantic Stage, the Equity theatre. So lots of opportunities! And the acting training is very string - one of the main reasons my D chose CCU.
