Schools with BFA Theater Programs that offer OSS Tuition Waivers for Strong Academics

I’m trying to compile a list of schools that have both BFA programs in Theater and that also offer OOS tuition waivers for students who have high academic stats (GPA, SAT, etc…). I’ve looked through all twelve parts of the Drama/Theater thread (my head still hurts) and saw that Florida State does this. Does anyone know from first-hand experience of any other university that offer a BFA in Theater degree and also offers an OSS tuition waiver for very strong students? I know that BFA programs are by audition and are very competitive. We live in a state, unfortunately, that has no BFA Theater programs (and none on the Academic Common Market). Thanks for any help!

I know both Otterbein and Oklahoma City University have good merit aid. Not the same as the OOS tuition waiver, but really good money for academics. OCU has a nice chart on their website telling you what you qualify for based on GPA/SAT/rank.

Not OOS tuition waiver (which may become harder and harder to come by as the economy gets tighter and state schools rely on OOS tuition dollars), but CCM has scholarships (I think called Cinncinatus, or something like that) that seem to award students with strong academics.

I teach at JMU in VA, we do not have a BFA program (rather an “intensive BA”), but JMU does have a limited number of scholarships (I think 6 per year) that cover the cost of in-state tuition for four years based on academics and service – [Freshman Scholarship Programs at James Madison University](<a href=“Freshman Scholarships & Financial Aid - JMU”>Freshman Scholarships & Financial Aid - JMU)

I am sure that other schools may have other similar types of scholarship programs. Good luck!

Austinmtmom and KatMT: Thanks for the replies! I will check out the websites for all three of those schools (OCU, Otterbein, and JMU).

Don’t forget CCM… I think they are generous with academic based scholarships.

You may also want to look at Muhlenburg… again not a BFA program but the opportunity to create an intense BA program. I believe they are also generous with academic based aid.

You may also want to look at Coastal Carolina University. They offer academic awards that bring the tuition down to almost in-state, which is very reasonable. They are a BA program but require an audition.

If strong academically, University of Minnesota/Guthrie has a scholarship that covers the difference between out of state and in state tuition, if that’s what OSS Tuition Waiver means.

My younger daughter is in the BFA Theater program at Brooklyn College. She also is in the Macaulay Honors Program, so her tuition is free.

Thanks to all of the above posters for your suggestions. I am going to spend the morning studying the websites of the above schools!

To clarify the CCM situation, the basic Cincinnatus Scholarship is “only” $2000/year. After that, the prospective student must enter a competition (which is held a the school) for the chance at winning higher awards.

My S visited Ithaca College and Syracuse U., both of which have BFA programs, and during the campus visit each school noted that it has a merit-based program that offers a tuition break for students who have certain GPAs/SATs. We expressly asked to make sure the programs were merit-based and not financial need-based. They may have info on their websites.

We attended a presentation by Texas State and they do offer a theatre scholarship that brings down the cost to in-state tuition. The total COA at TSU is estimated at $18,000 for in-state.
