Has anyone ever heard of this school? It supposedly one of the most prestigious schools in Europe.

It is a German school offering the Internationa Bacc. and German Arbitur.
In Year 10, they have the Pre-IB program, and then in year 11 & 12 they have the IB. So I believe then until year 10, the instruction would be mostly in German.

It sounds like an excellent school–they do have scholarships, but they do not pay for everything.

I know this school very well, because I thought of applying there and know some people who go there, but then I didn’t apply, because it is very expensive and it is hard to get a scholarship and I thought I wouldn’t get one anyways…
Salem has a lot of exchange programs, e.g. with Phillips Academy Andover, Choate Rosemary Hall, Loomis Chaffee and the Athenian School and Deerfield, as Jonathan said
So if you want to know something about Salem, I believe I can answer your questions

Hi French Silk Pie!
I know the school very well, since I attended it for 4 years and graduated from there. Obviously I am biased, but I loooved it! It’s an awesome place to spend your high school years! It is indeed one of the most famous schools in Europe and it’s known as the most prestiguous school in Germany. They do have exchange programs with Exeter, Deerfield, Choate and Loomis Chaffe (that’s where I spent 4 months). They do have scholarships, some of which cover all the expenses, but its rather competetive.
As for the prestige, 5 students got accepted at Cambridge last year and I believe 5 at the London School of Economics, which is A LOT considering the size of the graduating class (140 students),not to mention the acceptances at other world-class universities. American Universities are very popular among the students aswell!!
If you have any questions, feel free to ask, I’ll be more than happy to help you!!!

Oh, I do have a few questions. Do they let non-German speaking students into their school? Because under admissions, it says something about having to have a firm hand on German.

One my best friends was German, she loved it, and I always have loved German and Germany!

Do you speak german?

Do you know anything about their extra-curricular activites (like after school hours) or anything about what they study in their middle school, because their website doesn’t say…and is the pre-IB program for grades 9 &10, or just grade 10?

FrenchSilkPie, my mom has tried to get me interested in that school forever since she is german and I speak german and stuff! I think they have a summer boarding program at the school thats supposed to be really great…maybe you could do that to get a better idea about the school.

Well, I’m not LaCoralie, but I think I can answer some of your questions
I don’t think you have to be fluent in German, you’ll learn it really quickly when you’re there and the Pre-IB program (grade 10 only) is mostly in English anyways
But I heard about students who came to Salem without knowing any German and they could speak it really well after a year, becasue they had instruction in German as a foreign language
In grade 9 and 10 they study German, English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Art, History, PE and if you want to, a second and third foreign language which can be Latin, French and Spanish
You choose four activities for the afternoons and one of them is a service, like community service and the others can be sports, music, art, theatre or things like MUN or other clubs

I was born in Germany and moved to the U.S. when i was very young. My mother had always wanted to send us to this school but I chose to apply to BS in the U.S. (Deerfield '15). I didnt know that they have an echange progrma with DA, I might look into it. This school is extremely competitive and very difficult to get into. Many students apply and most do not get in. You might want to enroll yourself into a Pre-IB school ( I went to one in Dallas) and also become proficient in the German language. Also make sure your grades are high. Try to diversify your profile with extra curriculars. Violin seems to be a common instrument at that school. Hope I helped :). If you need any more info, PM me and I’ll call a few of my friends from Germany
