Hey everyone! Just stumbled on this thread. Im an out of state student from St Louis, Missouri(basically a smaller Chicago without the cool stuff)and I actually got accepted a LONG time ago back on December 16. I’m attending SDSU next year incoming Business Major with specialization in Integrated Marketing. I was super surprised to get in literally 18 days after I applied. My stats aren’t that exceptional but maybe because I’m out of state and have expressed interest for a while now? I got into SDSU whike I was waiting for Loyola Marymount and I got waitlisted so I submitted my intent to enroll and housing forms for SDSU yesterday.
Anyway here are my stats:
3.45 weighted GPA
1410 SAT
2 Varsity Sports
Lots of extracurriculars(film and marketing business on the side, piano, community service)
5 on APHumanGeo
4 on APLang exam
I also visited SDSU in October and expressed strong interest.
@Ismail4112: SDSU does not consider an applicant’s level of interest in their application review.
Being OOS puts you in a different admission pool so your competition are less applicants vs. in-state applicants. Also OOS students bring extra $$$ to the Cal States so that makes you very desirable.
I am not taking away from your accomplishments but clarifying the misconception that showing interest helps.
@Gumbymom thanks for your insight! Honestly makes me feel better about my acceptance! I’m so excited to start in the fall. The school is amazing and I can’t wait.
Still waiting for the “final” financial aid letter/decision. My son (out-of-state) was accepted in mid-Dec. Don’t really expect much (if anything), but would like to get the final and official financial aid package offer nonetheless.
@Gumbymom I saw somewhere on here that your son (I think) went to SDSU, & you seem to know a lot about CA schools generally. Could you give any insight into what it’s like to be an OOS student there? We visited once for the dance audition but probably won’t get the chance to go back again given COVID-19. How does it compare to CS Long Beach for example. We decided not even to audition there after visiting the campus because it was just so obviously a commuter school, but we loved SDSU’s campus. Also, insights about Greek life would be helpful. My DD is interested in joining a sorority. Finally, it looks like this decision could be coming down to LMU vs. SDSU. She was rejected from UCSD & UCSB, accepted at UCSC & waiting on UCI–would be great if UCI comes through & she’d likely end up going there, but we can’t rely on that. Other than expense which is obviously a factor, which would you say is the better school between LMU & SDSU? Thanks in advance!
Although SDSU is considered a commuter school (majority of Cal States are commuter schools) and since there is a 2 year on-campus living requirement, it does have less of a commuter feel. My son loved his time at SDSU and still keeps in contact with many of his SDSU friends. Even after the 2 year on-campus living requirement, most students will find housing in close proximity to the campus. Besides my son, my niece is currently a 2nd year there and really loves SDSU now but was not near the top of her list of possible schools 2 years when she first was accepted but could not imagine going anywhere else now.
Another niece is currently deciding between SDSU and CSULB for Fall 2020.
CSULB definitely has a more commuter feel vs. SDSU. Plenty of building/upgrades going on at both campuses but CSULB also just lifted the Freshman year on-campus living requirement for non-locals. Not sure the reason so there may be less students living on-campus for Fall 2020 which be significant for an OOS student.
SDSU would be a better option for an OOS student regarding transportation. The Green line trolley station on campus allows students to travel all around San Diego without need a car. A nice advantage along with a discounted student rate. My son did not have a car his first year at SDSU and used the trolley extensive.
It would be hard to get around at CSULB without a car.
Greek life I think is slightly more prevalent at SDSU than CSULB and my niece which is graduating this year is also considering a sorority. Sororities are competitive at SDSU more so than CSULB so she is leaning towards CSULB for that reason. There are no guarantees for either campus when it comes to rushing and against my recommendations that she should pick a school with academics in mind first and foremost, the sorority issue is still a big concern for her.
My son was in a Fraternity at SDSU and a member of the Greek counsel but it did take him until Sophomore year to get a bid. Both his Fraternity and sister Sorority had many OOS members so a good diverse group of students.
When it comes to choosing schools I really believe a student needs to consider the costs first, academics and finally the social scene to find the best fit.
I am not knowledgeable about dance majors so I cannot recommend which school LMU or SDSU would be a better option for her but I told my son’s and my nieces, go with your gut.
@Gumbymom Thank you for all of your comments. They have been tremendously helpful! We visited SDSU, and simply loved the campus. My S wants to become a speech pathologist, and SDSU has by far the #1 program in California. We are so thrilled when he got in! The only concern we have is about the Greek life, which based on my reading is “huge” at SDSU. We are from Asia, and have no idea what fraternity is; and I am pretty sure that My S is also clueless. Will it be a problem if one does not join the fraternity?
Thank you so much @Gumbymom – this is all so helpful!! Totally forgot about the trolley at SDSU–that’s a definite plus as well. Have you heard anything about schools pushing back the time to accept offers? DD was also accepted at U of Arizona & just got an email pushing back deadline from May 1 to June 1. I’m hoping this is the start of a trend given COVID-19. It’s so hard to make decisions without actually visiting campus, at least once. All the schools are canceling accepted students days, etc. Wondering if you had heard anything on this.
Thought I would share my rejection stats lol
weighted gpa: 4.4
unweighted : 3.85
Sat: 1210
In state local
Major: nursing
(Got accepted to CSULB, CSUSF, CSU poly Pomona, UCR, UC Merced, UCSD)
My major was impacted but I thought the amount of college classes I took in high school would be enough to cover for my low SAT score.
@xiaobaomama2020: It will not be a problem if your son is not interested in Greek life. Every student can find like minded students on campus.
My niece whom is currently a Sophomore is not involved in Greek life and not interested in joining a Sorority has been able has found a fulfilling social life without it.
@gumbymom do you have any info on the process of changing majors? My HS senior son was accepted as a pre international business major but we have learned he is not actually part of the Business College but the College of Arts and Letters.
