“Charlottesville lawyer James L. Camblos III, who has been a prosecutor in Albemarle County and nearby Waynesboro, said that he met with Matthew on Saturday and has been retained by Matthew’s family. Camblos couldn’t immediately be reached Tuesday night.”

Also from The WAPO article. He’s a UVA alumni. Speculation and common sense would suggest that he is encouraging JM to turn himself in. We’ll see.

That a defense lawyer is an alumnus of the local university has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the case. If it did 3/4 of defense lawyers in any given county as well as local prosecutors would need to recuse themselves from cases in their jurisdictions. Good grief! Where are people coming up with such rank speculation?

Aren’t you bound by some legal code of conduct to encourage your client to surrender? At least you must be bound to not encourage or instruct them to hide, right?

I was pretty sure Longo was from Baltimore after hearing him speak (what an accent!), but I hadn’t known he himself was an attorney. Whatever his reasons for citing Matthew publicly before he had enough evidence to put out a warrant for his arrest, isn’t there any concern that pursuing him in such a manner could lead to the defense making the argument that Mathew can’t get a fair trial in Albemarle County (or whatever the jurisdiction is)? Will the judge be forced to move any trial to another jurisdiction? How will that affect the outcome?

Mathew’s grandma identified him to the press before Longo’s “Jesse Mathew” news conference. She told a reporter she knew it was him right away because “he’s always wearing those stupid shorts”.

What WAPO article? Or did you mean the lawyer went to UVa?
From ABC, in Lynchburg:
"Liberty University sent the following email to our news room:
“Liberty University had a student by the name of Jesse Leroy Matthew enrolled from 2000 to 2002. This student was on the football team roster during the 2000 (redshirt freshman), 2001 and 2002 seasons.”

291 Camblos went to UVA. But, I agree it’s irrelevant and meaningless. And, yeah, it looks like Matthew was at Liberty for a couple of years. There’s also video of him coaching football the evening of Sept 13th and his landlady told local news stations he was unusually pleasant that night. For what it’s worth. :)

That accent runs from Youngstown through Pa and into Maryland and New Jersey. It’s not unique. The mid-atlantic version of the Boston accent.

I’m not sure when the guy was publicly identified. It seems to me that being the last person seen with Graham is/was reason enough to have a search warrant issued, and at that point you’re probably stuck with identifying the fellow. I don’t think they care about future change of venue issues. They need two things right now. The suspect, and a good sample of his DNA (which possibly they already do have. I hope so.) If he’s guilty, change of venue won’t help him.

If you watch that first news conference Longo actually comments on the timing of the ID. Reporters already had the name and at least one paper had printed it. And, the Covenant football video and the landlady stuff was from the night she disappeared. Also, the Nelson County Commonwealth Attorney has just put out a press release saying there’s no credible connection to the Murphy case at this time. The investigation continues.

Well, I happen to be a native Philadelphian and, believe it or not, I can detect the subtle differences.

I really don’t think people pay attention to “grandmas” the same way they do the Chief of Police. If I were a defense attorney, I’d surely downplay granny and raise hell about the CoP!

Re # 307 and # 310. The Covenant School played football at 4pm on Friday, September 12th, according to their website. Hannah disappeared early Saturday morning , the 13th.
In the footage I see with the landlord, she says she saw him Thursday, the 18th and he seemed “nicer than normal.” The reported had no followup question for her, like “what do you mean”? so I found the interview quite odd. Is there also footage somewhere where she says she also spoke with him on the 13th? I may have missed that.

Here’s some info from the landlady from a different reporter where she also tells this reporter that she last saw him Thursday night (the 18th) , She said she did not always get along with him , but he was pleasant that night. The police searched his apartment and car in the early hours of the next day, the 19th. Then he went to the police station the afternoon of the Saturday, the 20th. At least, that’s how I understand the timeline. http://wtvr.com/2014/09/22/jesse-leroy-matthew-wanted-poster/

The one thing I will say about the tweet I saw of Jesse Matthew being at the Covenant football game on that Friday, is that it showed a still shot of him from video footage, head on. It depicts him more relaxed than the picture on the wanted poster. (is that a prior mug shot? DL photo?) It made me realize that it may be helpful if that poster showed a couple of different pics, including an “enhanced” one as to what he’d look like currently without the dreadlocks and facial hair, as I wouldn’t be surprised if that was gone by now!
