It’s being widely reported that Matthew is in custody - press conference is delayed but media outlets are reporting he was arrested outside of Virginia so extradition will be required.

Galveston Texas. I figured it would have been DC, Md, Pennsylvania , or NC. Very surprised to hear they got him in Texas. Probably trying to get to Mexico but surprised he got that far.

If he knows anything about Hannah’s whereabouts, I hope he will do the right thing. The reward has increased to $100,000 - I suspect there will be some folks coming forward now.

Galveston isn’t on the way to Mexico, maybe had friends/family there?

ETA< I guess from VA it is, never mind.

Apparently law enforcement has very little evidence on the alleged perp – he came in on reckless driving, right(?)… which is a misdemeanor.

Hopefully she is in a dissociative fugue and got to Montana or Maine safely…

You are incorrect on all counts. He didn’t come into the station on reckless driving. He came into the station after the police had searched his car and apartment. The reckless driving and subsequent charge for that was AFTER he was in the police station. It is not true that they have very little evidence. They are not stating publicly what evidence they have gathered, but they gathered enough to obtain an warrant for his arrest for kidnapping with intent to defile. He is in custody now for that (the reckless driving is surely a secondary offense).

Kudos to the folks who got him in Texas. This is Longo and an FBI agent speaking:

I’m unsure about the ‘flee to Mexico’ speculation. He wouldn’t need to drive to the Port of Galveston to try to get to Mexico. He could have done that from any major seaport on the Gulf. Tampa, Mobile, New Orleans for example.

The Mexico angle was just one possibility that was mentioned by one of the commentators. He was on the beach in Galveston (Gilchrist ) but who knows, maybe he was going to head back on the highway and try to cross into Mexico by land . And maybe he had no intention of going to Mexico. I’m guessing more will come out about what he really was trying to do, where else he may have been on the way to Galveston, etc. as time goes on…

Reports are saying he was on the beach camping in a tent and did not resist arrest.

Here he is going to jail…

<a href=“Suspect in University of Virginia student disappearance arrested in Galveston - ABC13 Houston”>Page Not Found | abc13.com - ABC13 Houston;

He evidently spent Thursday night on the beach. I just watched a store surveillance clip and interview with the employee who sold him Off for mosquitoes and supplied water for him Thursday - having no idea about the manhunt or anything related to it.

They received a call about a suspicious person camping, ran his license plates, and nabbed him. It almost seems too easy. Now, they have to make him talk.

Okay, it wasn’t that easy. It was very good police work.

http://wtvr.com/2014/09/24/report-cell-phone-ping-and-highway-sensors-tripped-up-uva-abduction-suspect-in-texas/

Good. I hope they get the truth out of Matthew, and find Hannah soon.

That “local forensics expert” may be accurate but just note it’s full of qualifiers. “I presume they had legal wire taps,” “It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if police have a way to photograph a car that goes through say a toll that sets off an algorithm or a ping …" Let’s see.

I can understand why someone would call in a “suspicious person” report. I have two friends with beach houses in Gilchrist (Bolivar Peninsula) that they mainly use weekends and/or summers. Both know the families around the area - those who make their home there and those who come and go. I’ve never seen anyone set up a tent and camp along the beach front for a night or two though I suppose it happens … but still … I imagine he stood out enough for someone to make that call … particularly if he didn’t look like someone out to enjoy the beach. Bolivar Peninsula is off the interstate highway; it connects to Galveston Island by ferry (unless you want to go the long long way around). From Galveston you have a straight shot into Houston.

Interesting question arises regarding whether you need a legal wiretap warrant in order to ascertain from where incoming calls are originating. If you’re not taping the content of the calls, you’re not violating the “self-incrimination” protection…you’re just ascertaining the rough location of someone.

Regardless, I’m glad they have him. Now there will be a good DNA sample.

I would think that the very first thing on the table would be offering a significant deal if she is alive and he knows where or with whom. I would also think that if as much as a day passes without such news, then either he is not the person who finally ended up with her, or he killed her. The latter seeming more likely, I’m sorry to say.

There was an NPR interview about someone who encountered him inn a road rage incident after which he said JM suddenly switched gears and became very apologetic and drove him to the hospital. In other words, something is really odd about this guy.

Banks is a retired forensic psychologist, interviewed on camera. Since the original reports based on him came in last night, I don’t think he qualifies as a " A federal law enforcement source" or some insider with access.

Yes, a tap requires a warrant, which requires its own probable cause. And in the digital and cell worlds, it’s a bit more complicated to translate info.
