This year’s CRE for SEAS class of 2017 is The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr.

I always think it’s interesting to see what is chosen each year.

Is this used in the STS class? If not, how is it utilized for 1st years?

They will be assigned to small discussion groups that will meet once in the days between move in and the start of classes. The book was sometimes brought up during STS, but tbh my son doesn’t remember if it was students or the professor mentioning it.

Thanks. Looks like a good summer vacation read - maybe I’ll read it by the beach as well when S1 is done with it.

It’s actually an interesting selection of books. I love to read and have read several on the list. Like you plan to, I read 2015’s selection after my son did, Packing For Mars by Mary Roach. As someone who vividly remembers the summer of 1976 when Viking orbited and landed on Mars*, I found it a really interesting read.

*My dad was working at Goddard Space Flight Center at the time, so we were all pretty immersed.

Wait sorry for not knowing what are we supposed to do? Do we have to read this book, and when?

@madara, check the link blueiguana posted in post #1.
