Seattle coffee snobs and foodies

I’m heading up to Seattle today through Wednesday for a wedding / family reunion so I’m looking for a few things to do while the rest of the family is off doing things like hiking and wedding prep. I’m a bit of a “coffee tourist” in that whenever I’m travelling I try to seek out the best coffee shops. That is, places that source and roast their own single-origin beans and craft outstanding espresso drinks (.e.g places like Intelligentsia and Blue Bottle).

And although I don’t like the term, I guess I’m a foodie. In the food department I’m just looking for more casual places for lunch along the lines of gastropubs or killer small local restaurants. Cuisine along the lines of modern American, Californian, Asian/Fusion, etc. Not really a fan of Mexican, Greek, or Latin fare. I’m not much of a drinker, so not into brewpubs and the like.

Any suggestions for food, coffee, and other things for an out of towner? Looks like I’ll be staying near the corner of 23rd Ave and Union St., roughly 2.6 miles directly East of Pike Place Market.

drink water, it will be hot today.
I’ve never heard of the places you mentioned but there are good coffee shops on Capitol Hill although since the neighborhood is changing, don’t know what’s still there.
Only place I can think of offhand is Ezells,( which is fast food fried chicken) across from the high school on 23rd.
D and her friends liked Dur Dur, when they were in high school. ( which is just off 23rd on Cherry)
It’s a Somalian cafe.

I would go to yelp look for the place with the most/highest ratings and head to those places.

Can’t recommend any coffee shops because I am not that much into artisan caffeine (or any caffeine  ), but if you want to experience non-chain food in Seattle, I highly recommend restaurants founded and owned by Tom Douglas, our local celebrity chef. Dahlia Lounge serves awesome food.

Here is what he personally recommends (you will have to travel to the downtown area most likely for most of his suggestions):

Traffic is also going to be a bear today, otherwise I would recommend Fremont as a destination for restaurants, maybe Ravel or Tray Kitchen.
It’s hard to keep up.
You could try Slate coffee.

Same neighborhood is having an edible garden tour, get maps at West Woodland school.

If you are out on Bainbridge Island at all, try Roosters Cafe. We loved the quaint atmosphere and my D said it was some of the best coffee she has had (I’m not a coffee drinker)

Thanks guys, great ideas! Keep 'em coming!

I’m not a big parade guy but I was planning on checking out the Pride parade for a bit tomorrow as it feels like a really historic moment. Then of course chilling with a good latte and some good food afterwards.

We don’t drink coffee, but up around Capitol Hill, there’s Coastal Kitchen, the Lost Lake Cafe, Odd Fellows (not the club, a restaurant) , the Deluxe-but that’s the hub of Pride Weekend, so I don’t know if you’d even be able to get a seat. Best BBQ in the city is close to where you’re staying-the Home of Good BBQ, opens at noon. Cash only. Same ownerd for decades-they served MLK when he was here. Have fun!

Vivace for espresso. Anything serving Lighthouse or Stumptown roasts as well.

Food? Depends on what you like, I would suggest Brouwer’s gastropub in Fremont as a place worth visiting. I also like Black Bottle in Belltown. Echoing what others said, I’d stay out of Capitol Hill as it’ll be crowded this weekend and parking’s impossible enough anyway.

Melrose market on Melrose between Pike and Pine - go down Union to Broadway, then go north to Pike, turn left (West) and down the hill to Melrose

Victrola coffee is in that same general area.

Brouwers in Fremont is great. Check the chow hound board for Seattle for some other ideas.

Since you are already on Capitol Hill, I would just stay there this weekend, maybe go over to Seattle Center if you are brave.
Although only if you don’t mind walking/bus.

Or you could go the other direction, and go east to Madison Park.
The Seafair Pirates landed at Alki this morning!
I like Vivace espresso too, best on Capitol Hill.
Ive never been to Brouwers, I mostly just go to Fremont to get medical cannabis & groceries.
I miss the Still Life Cafe.
Although I dont really prefer hippies to hipsters. At least hipsters bathe.

If you head north of Seattle, up to Bellingham, try The Woods Coffee, they have 15+ locations & are locally owned, locally roasted, bake their own goodies, etc.

Stumptown roasts are very good. I like Top Pot donuts with them (a local chain with yummy donuts). If you are into popcorn, try Kukuruza (sp?) at the Market. And sample some Beecher’s Flagship cheese while you are there.

The original Starbucks is worth taking a look.

So much coffee so little time! @zeebamom I’m posting this from Victrola coffee right now. The espresso pull is lovely, rich and flavorful without any bitterness. Definitely looking forward to hitting as many of the other cafes and restaurants mentioned as possible.

The Starbucks Reserve Roastery is next to the Melrose Market. Expensive coffee, even by Starbucks standards, but delicious.

You might enjoy the Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting room at 1124 Pike. Here’s the Trip Advisor link:

And I second the recommendation for Caffe Vivace.

The husband of a friend, won’t buy any other coffee.
I can’t discern the difference from other high end coffees, but then I put milk in mine.

During a recent visit to Seattle, we went to this tea shop on Capitol Hill. Amazing.
