(See updated information in post #309) Match Me: NY Resident, White Female w/ Hispanic Background, 55k ish [95% GPA; nursing, biology]

@AustenNut any chance you have time to come up with a list of colleges that cost less than $55,000 a year, that might appeal to this poster?

I appreciate it but that sounds like a lot of work for someone and I feel kinda bad. Especially with my relatively vague and unfinished information. They don’t have to do it if they dont want to, but if they do than tysm

I just looked at UConn- $60,000 a year, UDel- about $57,000 a year, and Rutgers- it looked like about $50.000 a year out of state (unless I misread). Costs generally go up each year.

I do not see an advantage to these schools over a school like Buffalo, which has an excellent nursing program and access to all kinds of medical facilities.

You will get a lot of recommendations.

Alright, how would you describe buf’s dorms? And the networking/connections/opportunities?

If I remember right, you went there and became an extremely successful doctor

I am a speech-language pathologist, not an MD. I do know MDs who went to UB and other SUNYs.

I saw the dorms about 15 years ago so I cannot comment. As far as medical opportunities my guess is that there are a lot. UB has a medical school, nursing school, PT, speech, etc.

Lots of private colleges have list prices of over $55k per year. Many public colleges are more than that for out-of-state students.

$150k per year parental income could still get financial aid at some of the more expensive colleges. Check the net price calculators.

This is a very strong combination. 1450 on the PSAT is also very strong. 8 AP classes is plenty. Regardless of how anyone feels about affirmative action in general, for medical related fields it is legitimate. There are significant advantages to understanding your patients, which means that there are significant advantages to having health care providers come from a range of backgrounds. Also, being bilingual is quite valuable for health care providers. To me your ECs also look good. Having some medical experience is important. Given that a daughter is currently doing cancer research I did notice that you have raised money for cancer research. Thanks!

I think that you are likely to be looking at quite a few acceptances to a range of schools. The big issue is to figure out which school you would be comfortable at.

Duke is excellent. That does not necessarily mean that it will be a good fit for you. If you think that you would want to go there then I think that it would be worth an application.

The various SUNY’s are also excellent. You would get a great education, and save a lot of travel time and $$.

I would run the NPC for BU, and see whether or not it is likely to fit your budget. I do not know Florida University but would be inclined to do the same thing for it if you are going to apply there.

Yes. Many universities, probably most private universities, cost more than $55,000 per year. Even some public universities cost more that this if you are out of state unless you qualify for some form of aid. BU would have been more expensive that this for us and that was multiple years ago. However, your price point might vary depending upon whether you qualify for aid.

Okay, that sounds good. Ill do more research on the campus rn

Would you know around what my chances of getting in and/or getting money would be?

Alright thanks. Ill edit the comment since if thats the case, i can probably raise the price

Im not as concerned about money rn since my parents said we can afford anything thats not ridiculous, and my grandma can help us out. As of now im more curious what a good fit would be using other factors

Do you mean at UB? I would be shocked if you did not get accepted to the school. Your next job is going go be researching direct admit nursing programs. Some are direct admit, others require you to apply once you are there (if you want nursing, of course)

@aunt_bea can you please again tell this poster the positives of Buffalo.

Yes. Ill check it out and get back to you

Thank you so much! This was very helpful, and im so sorry for some reason I didn’t see this before

Im aiming for a 1500+ on the SAT. As for my background, you may not know i was mexican just by looking at me. But my dad’s father was a low-class immigrant from mexico. He dealt with a lot of poor conditions that ultimately led to his death wayyy before I was born- before he even met my mom. It affected my Dad a lot and was part of the reason he dropped out of college and never got a degree, and now pushes me to go to a good college so I dont end up like his dad. While I am not very dark skinned, I have a Mexican last name and I do speak spanish. A hispanic-heavy migrant center recently opened up near our neighborhood, and I am currently trying to get a group of kids from my school to raise money and help them out

Our daughter attended SUNY Buffalo about 10 years ago. She still uses their emails, invited friends from there to her wedding. She submits their résumés to Cal companies. She lived in Red Jacket and never had issues with housing.

She received a stellar CS and electrical engineering education and is doing extremely well. She’s a EECS manager now at a large, corporate CS firm in SoCal.

Its an 18% acceptance rate (naviance). Thats a lil crazy if u ask me, I am honored by your confidence. Last year 47 people from my school applied, 14 got in, and 4 are enrolled. Odds look a bit better but that doesn’t include getting into specific programs

It’s a little over 4 Hours from my home- that’s perfect!!

I have mixed feelings on the campus/city aspect. Getting war flashbacks from being locked in a city dorm bathroom overnight and getting taken to the hospital at UCL

Their CRNA program looks great

Are you saying that the University of Buffalo has an 18% acceptance rate? Or are you talking about nursing?

UB does not have an 18% acceptance rate.

Congrats to your daughter! How would she describe the dorms? I know it’s definitely not the most important college aspect, but I have a certain trauma from being locked in an older dorm bathroom overnight and nearly suffocating in a precollege program.

Additionally how were the resources there? Like labs etc

University of Boston, my bad sorry

UB is not direct admit to nursing. That being said, I feel you are a very strong candidate.

I believe if you look under the nursing major you will find a list of direct entry programs. I would add a few to your list.
