We watched The Electric Horseman with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda last night. It’s a very dated movie but it is enjoyable. It was fun seeing Las Vegas in the late 70s, because I visited there with my family about that time. So different than today.
One of my favorites from way back!
Mine too!
The Lovely and Talented and I just saw Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and it was surprisingly good. We saw it largely because Viola Davis and Peter Dinklage were in the cast, and Davis stole the show, despite her limited screen time. She went all-in as the evil, creepy mentor for the future President Snow. The two leads, Tom Blythe and Rachel Zegler were excellent, and she was such a good singer that we did not mind the gratuitous musical numbers. Recommended.
“It’s deja vu all over again”
I can’t wait for The Boys in the Boat. I loved the book.
In case you are also excited to see rowing, here’s a sample from the Dad Vail Regata in 2015 to get your heart rate up. You can skip to about the 4 minute mark if this it too long:
The PBS original version with actual footage is a great watch too.
The Boys in the Boat is one of my favorite books ever. I want to see the movie but hope it is done well.
Love this movie! My dad and I quote this movie all the time.
It is being shown this Sunday locally here! Sadly, all tix to the nearby place have been scooped up.
We bought tickets for the 28th, it was wide open in Bellevue. Also got tickets for Christmas Day at the Cinerama for Wonka, looking forward to that venue again!
As I said in the Barbenheimer thread:
A quick note that Barbie is on (HBO) Max, free for subscribers. Visually stunning, expertly crafted, excellent acting. I didn’t like Ryan Gosling in La La Land but thoroughly enjoyed him here; he embraced the role. Message felt somewhat heavy handed but I was spoiled for that.
100% agree re Ryan Gosling. He was the perfect Ken.
What makes “the perfect Ken”?
(Wondering - I agree he was great bur can’t figure out why!)
Bland, a little clueless, very white bread, a light weight, but a good guy at heart.
I read that Ryan Gosling was at first reluctant to take the role. Then he saw his daughter’s Ken doll face down in the mud next to a squished lemon, texted a photo to Greta, and said, “I shall be your Ken, for this story must be told.”
He became a Ken rights activist - I can see why some reviews said he stole the show. He said he embraced his inner child from his Mickey Mouse Club days. Apparently he contributed many ideas that made it into the movie.
We’re watching “Bank of Dave” on Netflix. It’s a cute British movie. We’re enjoying it. Reminds us of when the big muckety-mucks come up from Boston or New York City to Maine.
Just watched it. Great recommendation. Feel good show.
He is hilarious, and his non verbal communication is spot on. He comes across believably as totally innocent. Ryan Gosling was tailor made for this role. Doesn’t hurt that he makes for a gorgeous Ken.
