Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

Watched Woody Allen’s ‘Manhattan’ yesterday, free on Tubi. I guess we never saw it. Enjoyed it. Looked up his bio and apparently he was writing jokes at 15 and selling them. If wiki is correct he failed motion picture production class at NYU and dropped out.

Enjoyed “The Christmas Chronicles” with Kurt Russell. Good for kids and adults. It made me laugh a lot.

Saw Wonka yesterday with my three 20 something sons. We all enjoyed it. A good fun old fashioned movie musical, and some of my favorite British actors including Carson and Queen Elizabeth

We are on an oldies watching spree!
Just finished the Airport series. Moving on to other subjects. Mr. wanted to watch A Few Good Men. What a great movie! Somehow, after that, we zeroed in on the Crocodile Dundee trilogy! They don’t make movies like that anymore.

I tried to watch it on Netflix; stopped after 10 minutes. I usually read the critic reviews on IMDb. Brian Tallerico (Roger Ebert) matches my take on most films.

DH and I enjoyed Bank of Dave on Netflix. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but we thought it was entertaining.

I saw “the boys in the boat” yesterday. Not only were there no surprises in the story or the way it was told, I felt like it was a dumbed down version of a greater story. Every beat was underlined and predictable.

A few good Men is a classic. So good. I remember when my younger son decided to opt out of either of the AP English options in order to take an English elective centering on mysteries. On Fridays they watched movies or TV shows. He loved that movie.

(And for the CC angle - I think the A+s he got in that class were probably as good for his GPA as B’s in an AP class, he did some creative writing which he continued in college and has now turned into a hobby of putting together a video game. But more to the point it really helped him enjoy his senior year.)

Not everyone’s cup of tea, but I watched The Dictator (2012) with Sasha Baron Cohen last night with a bunch of my 30-something kids and a few of their hometown friends who were back home for the holiday. Parts of movie are absolutely raunchy and tasteless (like 12-year-old boy humor), but there are a few scenes that make up for all of that. It’s great political satire.

That sounds like how I felt about Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan .

Barbie should definitely be there.

Leave the World Behind? Just no.

I talked my husband into doing another Christmas movie. He suggested A Christmas Candle (Prime). As we started it, had an ever growing suspicion that we had seen it before. Eventually he agreed. But we continued anyway, enjoying it again (with some things being remembered, others not). Sweet movie. If you like Downton Abbey, especially the servants and village folk, you’ll like it too.

On my list to watch!

My husband decided for some unknown to me reason that I am a big fan of movies about courts, lawyers, and judges. Thankfully, his suggestion for tonight was a good one - Legally Blond. :+1::+1:

H, S and I saw Boys in the Boat yesterday. We all enjoyed it. I would give it 8/10. My problem was that the book is one of my very favorites and I knew it would never measure up. There was just a lot more background in the book about what all of the guys (not just the main character) had endure as poor kids in the 1930’s and it was fascinating to me. But overall they did a good job with the movie.

We re-watched The Shawshank Redemption. I love that movie. Easily in my top 20, probably top 10, maybe top 5 movies of all time. But the reason we watched it again was odd. We were walking around our Boston hotel and came upon a shelf that was like a free little library, but it was 2 shelves not protected by weather? Sort of odd, but the DVD set was there and in great condition. I’m sort of surprised H doesn’t already have the DVD since he collects far more than he should, but we didn’t, so he took it. And we watched it when we got home. It was fabulous.
