Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

Saw Nyad - story of Diana Nyad’s swim from Cuba to FL (discussed upthread I think).

Very inspiring - surprising (and delightful) to see women in midlife presented as vital and goal-oriented! Great acting from Annette Bening and Jodie Foster, too…

I watched Maestro last night. I thought Carey Mulligan was very good, but otherwise it seemed to be trying too hard for my taste. I can tell from this thread and my social media that I will likely be in the minority in my opinion, but I’m okay with that. To each his own…

You’re not alone in this. Many felt that Cooper’s performance was arranged to maximize Academy Award moments.

Yeah, I don’t watch them. I don’t think we even have the Hallmark channel.

A friend of mine watched it and was very disappointed that there was so little music featured. He was not that interested in Bernstein’s love life.

Poor Things was very unique and interesting. Not for people who want a conventional, formulaic movie.

D20 and I went to see The Iron Claw yesterday. I had no idea what it was about beforehand, which is probably a good thing - I would have opted not to see it based on a brief description. It was really, really good. The story sucked me right in and Zac Efron gave a phenomenal performance. Highly recommend!

It’s a good thing I read your review because there is not much as far off my radar as pro wrestling.

My son and I enjoyed The Boys in the Boat. He was a varsity runner all 12 seasons of track and cross country in high school, so he could relate to their dedication and hard work. It made me a little teary thinking of what he used to do.

We enjoyed Family Plan (Apple TV). Plenty of guns and fight scenes. But lots of family fun, a bit of the vibe from “The Incredibles”.

Watched the classic “Election” again, and it stands the test of time.

I watched “Filip” on Netflix yesterday. It’s a movie about a young Jewish man passing as a French Gentile working at a hotel in Germany during WWII. It’s a little brutal but I thought very well done.

We watched The Holdovers on Apple TV and really enjoyed it. When the film was over, Sideways, a 2004 film came up. Paul Giamatti was in it, so we decided to watch. Giamatti plays a recently divorced wine enthusiast who invited an old friend (Thomas Haden Church) on a celebratory trip before the friend’s wedding the next week. It was a great movie–H fell asleep.

@Bromfield2 - Sideways is one movie that all of our family loves!

When “Sideways” first came out it was getting a lot positive publicity. Without really knowing what it was about one of the people in our Bible Study class suggested we go see it as it was supposed to be such a good movie. While there was nothing in it that an adult would not be familiar with it was not “bible study” material.

No–probably not “bible study” content, unless you were focused on sins.

Loved Sideways!
