Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

I’m thinking this might be a movie weekend since we’re expecting three 100+ days in a row.

Ever day I thank God I moved to Maine in 1986. Even here, it’s in the upper 80s.

This has been the worst summer for us that I can remember in a long time. We’ve been averaging a good 5-7 degrees above normal for weeks and normal is absolute hell for me. And next week is forecasted to be worse.

That being said, we watched Abigail tonight. If you wait a couple of weeks, I think it will be free on peacock. We paid $6 through xfinity. I think it’s also on other platforms.

We both really liked it. Fun horror movie.

I saw an advance screening of Sing Sing last night which opens in select theaters on Friday and nationwide in early August. I highly recommend.

I watched it recently. If you’re looking for a great movie, don’t watch this. Lots of the movie is set at a resort in Thailand, which looks amazing. BTW the movie got a 13% on Rotten Tomatoes.

really hard to tolerate

Here is a movie critic’s assessment of the summer’s rom-coms. I like her column and trust her opinions!

Going to see Fly Me to The Moon tomorrow. Will post my review afterwards. I got tickets to the bougie theater where there’s wine for purchase. If the movie is awful, we will just drink more wine.

Not really worth watching. I was cringing looking at Brooke Shields. And IMO, no chemistry between the main characters.

I saw the first hour while getting a MRI scan so it was a bit noisy. Okay but I really didn’t enjoy watching the bridezilla. Shields was okay. I found Bratt really unappealing. So I have not been tempted to watch the rest.

I enjoyed that article. And now I want to watch a rom com.

I watched A Family Affair last night and thought it was a nice Friday night treat. The acting and writing were okay and I especially enjoyed Kathy Bates & Joey King. The sets weren’t quite as satisfying as a Nancy Meyers, but were still very good.

We really liked Fly me to the moon! Very refreshingly funny - the entire theater burst out laughing at times. Scarlett Johansson was perfect; have to say that chemistry between the two main characters was not the best, but the movie did not pretend to be a rom-com. I give it a solid 7 1/2 out of 10. Will it win any Oscars? Doubtful. Is it a good summer entertainment? Definitely yes. And feline lovers will love certain scenes.

I saw Thelma in the theater yesterday. Excellent movie - funny, poignant and true to life where it counts. For those who’ve seen it, here’s a true story: as I was exiting the theater, a woman walked up to me and called me by another name. When I looked confused, she said I looked just like this other friend of hers. I don’t think she was joking!

I really enjoyed Kathy Bates in Six Feet Under, which I finished last week. Now slogging my way through The Bear, plus some Grandchester and Presumed Innocent.

Walked out of “Fly me to the Moon”. Couldn’t watch after an hour. Unlikable character, implausible plot, and zero romantic chemistry.

I watched The Long Game on Netflix recently. I enjoy underdog stories, especially when based on a true story. It’s worth a watch if you’re in the mood.

Oh, that’s too bad! I was looking forward to seeing it. Sounds like I should skip it.

Not new, just new to us, we just watched All Things Must Pass, the Rise and Fall of Tower Records, free on Prime - really interesting documentary. We thoroughly liked it.

Oh bummer… we liked the movie. The first part was much slower; the majority of action happened in the second part. We thought it was quite funny, as apparently did our fellow movie goers. The fake lunar landing unravels absolutely not like the story of Capricorn 1 (the one with OJ Simpson). I did find the character of Channin Tatum (sp?) a bit wooden and not very relatable but thought that Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of a con artist marketer was spot on. One thing- the movie may be labeled as a rom com, but it is not supposed to be.
