Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

I just watched a good one on Netflix – Wicked Little Letters, with Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley. It got a well-earned 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I saw Wicked Little Letters several months ago. The performances were good, but I correctly guessed the culprit in the scene with the first letter, so the plot seemed trite and formulaic to me.

Well, it’s based on a true event so they couldn’t really do much to it, I guess. But I’d watch Olivia Colman read the phone book .

I hope you saw the end of the Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony.
There’s a hush when the music rises with the balloon of fire and a voice starts, then 320,000 gasps reacting together when they recognize the voice then hush again, to listen.
It’s goose bumps and heartbreaking and amazing, especially if you’ve seen the documentary.

I have not. I will. I did see a clip, and people are saying she lip synched, which she might have. But she also may have been bolstered enough to do a song or two.

She didn’t lip sync (a fact check has been published recently), she had been preparing for a year and had said, if she ever songs again it’ll be for the Olympics and her main hesitation was whether she’d be able to do it health wise - she arrived 2 or 3 days early to rest, the day before she had a 1-hour rehearsal, and she sang the one song. It’s a challenge not to cry.

Thank you for that. Yes! I saw a video yesterday where she was signing things and taking pics with fans. It made me cry. She’s so gracious. I’ve never been a fan of her singing but her humanity is not to be skipped over.

Agree about Olivia Coleman! I thought the actress who played Rose did a great job too. I liked it. Quirky, funny but not funny. I don’t think it was supposed to be a mystery because pretty obvious from the beginning because of facial expressions.

I teared up when she was singing the way I do when someone puts their all into it and wins a medal (or even does way better than expected). You could see her joy at just being there because that was her win.

The Rose actress was in season 3 of Fargo. She was a psychotic nurse. We loved her in that too.

Jessie Buckley’s performances in both Fargo and Wicked Little Letters were outstanding. She’s one to watch. (I couldn’t stop seeing Coleman as the Queen.)

I kept seeing Olivia as the chef in The Bear :woman_cook:

Jessie Buckley also played Olivia Colman as a young woman in The Lost Daughter.

H and I decided to go to the movies today and saw Twisters. We both thought it was a good movie to see on the big screen.

We rented Arthur the King last night. super feel good movie about a dog. Mark Wahlberg is a struggling adventure racer and the abused dog latches on to him. It’s super sweet and if you love dogs, a good rental. Bring tissues even if you sort of know what will happen.

M Night Shyamalan’s newest train wreck is The Trap. I really enjoy many of his movies, but this one is just filled with plot holes and it is obviously being used as a vehicle to promote his daughter. Josh Hartnett is very good working with subpar material, but he can’t save this movie.

Visited the Chateau d’If prison recently and am looking forward to seeing the newest Count of Monte Cristo film.
(The castle-island-prison put up signs on 2 cells back in the 1860s to refer to the novel for all the tourists, who then left graffiti around the stones .)
I will report once I’ve seen it.
