Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

Just saw the Kate Winslet movie Lee, a biopic about Lee Miller, a second word war photographer. DH wanted to see it and I was reluctant but clearly I need to trust his judgement more. Thought it was very good!

I saw “27 Dresses” on a flight. Had not seen it before - it was a good light film for passing time.

It’s been awhile since we’ve gone to a theater, but since we both loved Joker when it came out we decided to see Joker Folie a Deux - we don’t read reviews before we see films either.

We understand this film isn’t for everyone, but we liked it. After discussing it for almost an hour after we saw it we ventured over to IMDB and found some interesting tidbits that made us understand some characters that were in this film. I mentioned something I noticed at the tail end of the film (my love didn’t catch it) and lo and behold, it’s an integral piece to the unique puzzle.

This isn’t a fast moving film, and Joaquin Phoenix (in my opinion) does a great job with this character. Stephani Germanotta (aka Lady Gaga) tried to tone herself down but she’s a powerhouse and the camera loves her! She did a good job with her character as well.

We think it’s worth the watch but you won’t be sad if you wait until it streams. I’m glad we saw it in the theater though.

I saw A Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare on the plane coming home from England and aside from too much shooting enjoyed it. Not a great movie, but a great airplane movie. This review gets it just right I think https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/18/movies/the-ministry-of-ungentlemanly-warfare-review.html.

I also saw The Lesson, a movie which takes itself a bit too seriously, and made terrible airplane fare, I had a hard time understanding a lot of the dialogue. It didn’t help that there was a lot of dialog outside doing it’s best to be drowned out by crickets and other country noises. I did enjoy watching Richard Grant play a pompous and narcissistic novelist.

I saw Goodrich this afternoon. Hallee Meyers-Sheyer is the director/writer and I follow her mom, Nancy Meyers, on Instagram. I suspected I could count on a film with lovely interiors and I was right. Michael Keaton & Mila Kunis were excellent as they explored her issues with being 37 years old and watching her dad parent her much younger siblings with a more involved approach. I laughed, cried and left smiling.

Saw “Saturday Night”, which is a recreation of the chaos surrounding the launch of Saturday Night Live in October 1975.

The movie was really entertaining for me, as it introduces names I grew up with including Dan Akroyd, Jim Belushi, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, and Jane Curtin.

It also has good ratings on IMDB, but I think it’s a box office failure. The theater was nearly empty just a couple of weeks after release.

Don’t watch the new Nicole Kidman/Zac Efron film on Netflix(Family Affair). It’s bad and I like Nicole Kidman.

Don’t judge me, but I liked “The Wild Robot” a lot. Cute movie with some funny lines about motherhood (the possum mother was a card).

I concur! H wanted to see it since they read it at his school. I have not been an animated movie fan in many years (since the lion king). There’s just too much constant stupid and mean joking throughout. But this was different. It was sweet.

I feel like Nicole Kidman is everywhere. Thanks for the heads up.

Just saw “We Live In Time” (kind of a generic title) with Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield. Really good tender touching love story. Reminded me of “Love Story” but without the class divide and Ivy League setting.

Previews that looked good: A Complete Unknown (Bob Dylan story) with Timothee Chalamet. And Anora looked good. Didn’t like the premise/story line of Babygirl (married CEO dominated by hot male intern - is this someone’s idea of equality?)

I’d like to see this but plan to wait until it’s on a streaming service.

Watched most of Little Richard: I Am Everything (Hulu) the other day. Heavy on the intellectual (?) commentary but the music, OMG! Lots and lots of performance video and commentary by Little Richard himself and fellow musicians.

I just watched Anna Kendrick’s Woman of the hour, which is based on real life serial killer Rodney Alcala, who appeared on the Dating Game. I thought it was well done, but it was obviously disturbing. I can see this movie being difficult for many women to watch. It’s not just a story about a monster of a man who brutalized women, but about how some of the “nice”guys treat women.

D2 watched this and thought it was well done, but had the same take away as you. I think H and I are going to watch it tonight. I was a teen in Southern California when this was going on as well as the Hillside Strangler killings.

Just saw “Anora”. I think I’ve seen enough lap dances for a lifetime. But it was good. Intense. Mikey Madison was terrific. Saw a preview for Pedro Almodovar’s film “A Room Next Door” with Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore. Definitely on my “must see” list.

We enjoyed this movie about older, lone wolf crime scene “cleaners” (played by Brad Pitt and George Clooney) Watch Wolfs - Apple TV+

There was some violence and grimness. But the premise was unique, and it was surprisingly funny. The ending was rather confusing, we think intentionally so (maybe there will be a sequel?).
