Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

We just watched Coherence on Amazon. It’s about eight people having a dinner party while a comet is passing. Very odd happenings as a result. We really enjoyed it.

Just saw The Last Breath” in the theaters. Highly recommend! Based off a true story and also a documentary about the rescue of a deep sea diver repairing a gas line in the North Sea. I swear they show Dunnottar Castle on the coast in the beginning. Walking with the kids from stonehaven to the castle ranks among the best of my memories, so the movie had me at the beginning.

The the weirdest part happened after the movie. We followed this couple - very prim and proper couple around age 70. The woman went to the restroom. The man turns around and asks if we saw the movie. Um yeah. He says “you know what they should have done to make it more realistic?” Uh. Seemed pretty realistic to me? “They should have had him talk about seeing a bright light and being brought closer to it.” I’m sure I wasn’t hiding my ■■■? Look in my face very well. H told him it was based off of the documentary and pushed me out the door where we looked at each other and started cracking up. Who says that to a complete stranger?

Just saw One of them Days with my daughter. We both thought it was a delight.

We just watched Flow. I adored it. So beautiful and thought provoking. Movies like this hit differently now, since we are in “interesting” times.

I also watched Flow last night (on Max) and was mesmerized by the stunning animation and delightful characters. I was so worried for the cat! I am in love with that cat. Beautiful concept and execution.

I liked the very short Oscar acceptance speech from the director of the movie. We all are in the same boat! So true.

I pre-ordered Flow on BluRay. My tortie cat was mesmerized by the movie. And so were her owners. I’m sure we will watch it a few more times.

There was a wonderful article in the NYT about Flow about a week or two ago. He did this on open source software and said he didn’t feel comfortable rnough around people to use actors. I was so delighted to see this win! It was so beautiful in so many ways.

If you haven’t seen the short Anuja, highly recommend. Especially for a crowd interested in education.

Also recommend All We Imagine is Light. Slow paced. Apparently, many thought it should have been the Indian film nominated. It’s quite subtle, but thought-provoking and moving in a very non-flashy way.

When you win 4 Oscars the same night (and congrats), there’s not a whole lot to add in your third acceptance speech.

I was talking about Flow.

Did anyone see Anora? My husband and I watched about 15-20 minutes and felt it was awful. So much icky sex. Does it actually get better?

IMO no.

We did. I didn’t hate it, not like the Substance. That one was way worse. for Anora, the sex scenes were eye rolling, but I thought the scenes with the Russian gangsters were funny - much like in Home Alone. And the end was weird. I saw a review calling it a gritty Pretty Woman. Uh… no way. I’d give it 3.5 out of 10 stars.

The Substance… I told my male coworkers they might like it since 2/3 to 3/4 of the movie is almost bare naked, super hot women dancing shaking their boobs and butts at you. The rest ranges from weird to downright gross. The last 30 minutes they could have completely cut out and it would have been the same movie. It was totally bizarre and gross. I’m also not a Demi Moore fan. She strikes me as someone with poor self-esteem and is overly pre-occupied with her appearance. So this role did suit her. I’d give this 1.5/10 stars and only because the idea was interesting.

I thought Anora was in fact great. Watching it with my mom, uh … yikes! It’s a story about a sex worker, and it is graphic. Not romantic at all – It’s a job.

Great acting. There was a lot in it, actually. Power/money dynamics. The humanity of the often unseen and how they are reduced by others to their jobs. Personally, I think it’s worth watching, and I usually hate movies with lots of sex.

Thank you for the honest review!

We didn’t like it either. It was very predictable. Lots of sex and the “f” word. Maybe it opened some people’s eyes to the sex trade, which would be its only redeeming quality.

Good I read these comments…despite the accolades, it doesn’t sound like a movie for H and myself.
