Conclave was spellbinding. After seeing the following Best Picture nominees, Wicked, A Complete Unknown, Anora, and I’m Still Here, Conclave is my favorite.
Agree. I was blown away by the cinematography. Acting was superb as one would expect. Isabella Rossellini deserves an award for sure.
Sadly, we might be watching a real life conclave soon…
Agree.
I rewatched Conclave this past week (after seeing the pope’s declining health reports) and it was as good or better the second time.
I am a huge Ralph Fiennes fan (even though he scared me quite a bit as Voldemort character).
The rest of the cast was pretty powerful, too.
And yes, gorgeous cinematography.
Me too!
If you have a Regal Cinemas theater nearby, they are screening all ten Best Picture nominated films with $5 tickets. I just saw Nickel Boys, which was moving, and plan to see Anora and I’m Still Here.
Add me to those who watched Conclave last night because of the recent health reports about Pope Francis. And because everyone kept saying how good it was. I agree about the acting, the setting, the cinematography. I wasn’t a fan of the big secret revealed at the end though. I didn’t think the story needed it.
Keep in mind that the film isn’t a documentary and is actually adapted from a novel of the same name. Had they omitted the ending, people would complain about not being true to the source.
I haven’t read the novel but I’d probably have said the same about it. Or maybe not - the elements that carry the film wouldn’t be there to carry the novel.
There were several movies when I was younger about electing new popes, and others that at least touched on it. And of course I lived through several popes in the 60’s and 70’s (remember Pope John Paul only lasted a month, so had to do the whole election process again).
I watched it on an airplane but it took me 4 hours to watch a 2 hour movie and I still missed the very very end, so I thought I’d rewatch it on the way home. Couldn’t get the plane WiFi to work! I’ll have another chance to watch next week.
Slightly off topic. but I was (half) listening to the radio today when they talked about the Pope “resting in peace”. Of course, half listening I thought they were talking about him dying. They were not. They were talking about his hospital stay. Awful choice of words.
I also saw a quote where the hospital said “The Pope has left us.” Another poor choice of words.
We just watched Bridget Jones - Mad About the Boy on Peacock. I loved it
That’s on my list
I enjoyed the movie it was a welcome break from life. But for someone who’s won 2 Oscars I thought the acting was pretty bad.
Most critics and audiences have given good reviews for Bridget Jones (88% positive critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes). Renee has been Bridget in 4 films over many years and her character is well loved by many people. Like any film, there will be bifferences of opinion on actng. I enjoyed seeing Renee again as Bridget Jones. I thought she was great and true to her character.
‘Trouble’ on Netflix- if you’re looking for 1.5 hours of distraction and dare I say Swedish with subtitles rom-com. H and I loved it.
I saw “The Daytrippers” (1996) at the Paris theater in Manhattan yesterday. They had a Q&A after the film with Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Campbell Scott and the writer/director Greg Mottola. The theater was sold out. Hope Davis said it was so great to see a packed movie theater and hear the audience respond to what they’re seeing on screen. We all applauded.
“Logan Lucky” is from 2017 or so - we enjoyed it. I found it on a list of the best comedies on Netflix.
Great cast
