Seen Any Good Movies Lately?

And on PBS, very timely, the Ken Burns documentary
The Congress
(With David McCullough narrating.)

Watched Flow, an animated movie that received an Oscar nomination. The story kept my interest all the way to the end. The film is streaming on Max.

Amazing that the movie was made on a shoestring budget using a freeware program!

Prior to Flow, the animator created another movie - Away, available for free on Prime. That one was made using another program called Maya. Away is his solo project: he was the only person involved in making that movie, even the soundtrack was created by him, apparently.

I watched Conclave (via Peacock) yesterday and enjoyed it greatly (the cinematography is also gorgeous).

We watched Flow just now. It was ?interesting? For future watchers - there is no dialog! It’s sweet in many ways, but at points we were like “drugs had to be involved in the making of this.” The cat’s meows were super sweet and one of our cats was very interested in the film!

We also saw Casablanca in the theater last night. I had never seen it. Can’t say it blew me away either, but I liked it well enough. The flash back narratives before the movie are great, with little tidbits about the making of it. The script was written when they started and the actors didn’t even know how it was going to turn out until the end.

Saw “becoming Led Zeppelin”. DH is a big fan; I’m sort of so-so but it was definitely watchable. Had clips DH hadn’t seen before.

Saw “A Complete Unknown” in a theater. Enjoyed the performances, music and locations I recognized, including Cape May, which was supposed to be Newport. Hoboken was used for NYC.

I saw September 5 a few days ago and thought the film was interesting. I too was struck with how low tech things were back then.

Have you seen Spielberg’s film Munich? It picks up where September 5 leaves off and is very thought provoking.

My wife and I just watched the Conclave, and we heartily recommend it. The cast is amazing, with Ralph Feinnes, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci, Lucian Msamati, and Isabella Rossellini turning in nuanced, powerful performances.

I remembered yesterday how, years ago, the parish priest was amazed how much the teenagers knew about the papal election process—they had all recently read Angels and Demons!

I wish Pope Francis well, but at some point he will pass away, and because of Conclave, similarly, the process of choosing a new pope will be familiar to lots of folks.

And there is definitely a character in The Conclave who would not be happy with Pope Francis.

Recently watched Flow on Hulu. So beautiful and creative. Really delightful. And no dialogue! I’ll be rooting for it at the Oscars.

Not a movie but hopefully one day it will be! I saw a Broadway musical today–A Beautiful World: The Life of Louis Armstrong. The title role was played by an understudy but I can’t imagine a better performance. If a traveling version comes your way, see it!
