My daughters turned on the Barbie movie last week. I didn’t last 10 minutes. Maybe it gets better??
Yes, i thought Barbie did get better as it went along.
I saw Kinda Pregnant on Netflix tonight. I watched it because I like Amy Schumer and Will Forte. It had a couple laughs but i thought it was disappointing. And some of it was pretty stupid and not very funny.Anybody else watched it and have an opinion?
it certainly was suspenseful
I disliked Barbie as a kid, but loved the movie. I saw it in a very small theater in Vermont with a very enthusiastic audience which really added to the experience. Not a movie to see on a plane.
DH joined a movie club last month and dragged me along tonight. We had to watch “Defending Your Life” (Albert Brooks/Meryl Streep) beforehand. DH insists we saw this movie when it came out in ‘91, but I had zero recollection even after we (re?)watched it. I thought it was a totally B-level unfunny film, but most of the club loved it and consider it a cult classic. Last month, they discussed Elf, which I love but don’t consider discussion worthy. I don’t think I’ll be going back unless they choose meatier subjects.
(Confession: In all the Albert Brooks films they discussed, it was the other actors I remember most, and I don’t get the love for Meryl Streep even though I’ve seen most of her films.)
Watched One Chance with James Cordon (Amazon Prime) last night while sipping colonoscopy prep. It’s the story of Paul Potts, the Welsh mobile phone salesman who won Britain’s Got Talent singing opera. Really made the time go by pleasantly. Highly recommend (movie, not prep).
Elf? For a movie club discussion? Love Elf, too, but I don’t think I’d be going to that club either.
September 5th which tells the story of the hostage taking of the Israeli weight lifting team at the 1972 Olympics in Berlin. I remember watching it as it unfolded on TV. The movie is entirely from the point of view of the sports broadcast team from ABC suddenly thrust into reporting a tragedy unfolding in the Olympic Village as the rest of the Games are playing. For some reason, one thing that resonated with me was the slowness of the rotary phones back then. Some vital piece of information had to be conveyed as quickly as possible and everything slowed way way down as the number was dialed into the phone. Highly recommend.
I could talk about Elf for days!
I made it about 25 minutes and then I had to turn it off, H was upstairs sick and I told him it was pretty bad (we usually love her movies). I think it got a 15% or so on rotten tomatoes (I looked later).
Thank you so much for the recommendation of One Chance! As usual, Mr. B was not sure he wanted to watch and had his headphones and YouTube trоlls ready to tune out in case he hated the movie. There was no need for that crap. By the end, he wiped a tear. Great movie
!!
Wow that brings back memories ! I hadn’t thought of Defending Your Life in long time! I have to admit I agree with the cult classic status, although I haven’t watched it in 30 years so maybe my opinion would change with time.
If you’re an Albert Brooks fan, the movie holds and is right up there apparently. I like him the way I like beige – he adds solid background color to a film, but he’s not a strong leading character, and I find him only mildly funny. Meryl Streep was totally miscast. She just couldn’t carry the spaghetti string scene or make anyone believe she was in love with Brooks. Terri Garr or Shelley Long would have been much more believable. And funny.
We are visting/taking care of 93 yo MIL and so have to choose things that are upbeat and not too fast. Recently watched Awakenings, Paddington and Paddington 2. Awakenings has great performances from Robert DeNiro but also from Robin Williams. And the female lead is the woman who does the voice for Marge Simpson. Surprisingly, Paddington and especially Paddington 2 were well-done. The basic idea is to take myriad movie cliches and blend them together with a warm, quirky script.
We’ve been digging through the collection of the eighties to mid-nineties movies on Disney Plus. Came across Splash as one on their “romantic movies” list (I guess Valentine’s Day’s around the corner?). Boy we have not seen that movie in ages, and it was great to revisit. Daryl Hannah apparently did a lot of underwater stunts and had to wear that mermaid tail for hours without bathroom breaks!
DH and I watched “Run the Wild Fields,” a 2004 movie about a woman whose husband is missing during WWII. We thought the acting and story were both excellent. We watched it on Fallrise, a free streaming service with annoying ads (the same one sometimes repeats five times in a row, no joke), but I imagine you can find it other places. I highly recommend it.
The Paddington movies are fabulous. Hugh Grant names Paddington 2 as the highlight of his career.
walk down memory lane. costars/cameos include hugh grant, colin firth, emma thompson, isla fisher…
I asked DH to pick a movie to watch after our Valentine’s dinner tomorrow night. He picked Begin Again which we haven’t seen but is highly rated. I like Mark Ruffalo a lot but will have to set aside my general dislike of Keira Knightley.
