I agree - it wasn’t bad, but could have been better.
Another who didn’t read the book and lightly enjoyed the show for the cast.
That describes the books as well. Richard Osman was a TV producer and presenter before he started writing. Shakespeare, he’s not.
I thought the show was enjoyable for what it was, and although I did read the book, I’m not sure I would have watched if it didn’t have the star-studded cast.
H is on business travel in Europe this week so D2 and I went to the cheap movies last night and saw Freakier Friday. It was great, light entertainment!
Some friends recommended this movie, and we liked it. The short WWII flashbacks as expected are tragic, but the characters (2019 story) are rather sweet. I liked the part where old soldiers from both sides of the war chatted. (On a Viking Cruise, we did a Colmar Pocket WWII historic tour, which made it more meaningful for us.)
The Lovely and Talented and I lived it up and saw The Roses at the theater. This was an homage to War of the Roses, with the same premise, a different ending, and much better dialogue. As always, Benedict Cumberbatch was terrific, as was Olivia Colman. I’d give it a 3/5. The witty dialogue, replete with insults as only the Brits can manage, defined the first hour and a half, but the movie lost its way during the manic final thirty minutes (trying to not drop spoilers here.)
Here is one of the best scenes:
After listening to the book in the car with The Lovely and Talented, we couldn’t wait for it to come to Netflix. What a great cast! Is it me, or does Helen Mirren steal every scene she is in? We were a tad disappointed that it departed from the book.
Maybe they’ll turn it up to 12.
Seeing this with a neighbor couple in the next week or two.
We liked that one, too.
Just finished watching The Thursday Murder Club”. Loved it! I read the book a while back and had forgotten how witty the dialog is.
nobody 2 is a worthy sequel. better than accountant 2 but would watch both whenever they appear
Just saw the re-release of Hamilton. Fun to hear the interviews with members of the original cast. Hard to believe it’s been 10 years since Hamilton opened on Broadway.
Speaking of *Hamilton*, today is the NYC premier of another Wesleyan collaboration, “Happyend“ (2024), a heart-warming, faintly allegorical, coming of age story of five high-school classmates approaching graduation in Japan. According to writer/director, Neo Sora `14, only one of the principal characters was portrayed by a professional actor at the start of filming. Dialogue is Japanese with subtitles.
I just bought tickets to see the Downton Abbey final film on Saturday. Myself and two friends, all in our mid-70s. It got a pretty good review in the NYT.
It’s out already? You will need to provide a review on CC.
The Downton Abbey Movie will be released Friday, 9/12
I loved Downton Abbey the TV show, but I haven’t been as thrilled about the movies. I hope this one is better.
I was also a big fan of the Downton Abbey series too but not crazy about the movie(s). In fact, I had to google what the previous movies were about and realized that I never even watched the second one. Will have to catch up on that one before watching the new one. Was movie #2 better than #1? #1 was kind of forgettable.
I’ve always looked at the Downton Abby movies as little more than extended episodes of the TV show. Despite that, I still enjoyed them.
I wonder whether a better question for everybody would be, how many of these movies would you be willing to hop in a car and see in an actual theater?
