Selling, Buying, or Building Homes in Secret

Today, for the second time, we received a form letter informing us that friends have moved. The first couple only moved a mile away, while the second couple actually built a house in another state. Both of these couples are best friends with each other. The latest couple recently attended a house-warming party of a mutual friend, and never said a word. The people who had the house-warming party had talked openly about listing their home and about the trials and tribulations of building their new home. Selling a home and certainly building a home are major events. Why would people keep quiet about it? Doesn’t this seem odd?

I don’t find it odd. Some people just guard their privacy more than others.

I moved a lot growing up. People really didn’t know until we got into the new place and invited them over or sent them a change of address announcement. Doesn’t seem odd to me shrug

I guess I live in a more talkative area. It seems odd to me.

The form letter bothers me, too. Couldn’t they tell us in person or on the phone? An explanation of why they kept it quiet would be nice.

Why should they explain it? If there’s a reason they didn’t tell you, they’re not going to tell you why they didn’t tell you.

I know a couple who had their home listed and were vague/changed the subject when asked why and what their plans were. The house finally sold and they are renting now. I chalk it up to a financial decision they obviously prefer not to discuss.

They each sent a form letter?
What’s wrong with Facebook?

I have a client who is thinking about buying a new house. He was very active in the neighborhood and feels rather guilty about leaving it and has asked me not to tell anyone. So far he hasn’t moved (he’s been looking for a year) no house is perfect and the proposed renovations have made it not worth it for him. Too bad for me, because if he ever does find the right not quite perfect house, I’ve got a nice job!

JustTry, I do think there are a lot of homes being sold due to financial reasons and I could see people not wanting to elaborate on reasons. In one of these cases, the home was much larger and the other case, they claimed they built it. But I guess you just never know. In the past, the only times I’ve seen things so hush-hush, turned out to be divorces.

Maybe they had reasons which are absolutely none of your business. In that case, they owe you no explanation whatsoever.

I have to agree with those who say it’s the couple’s own business. People aren’t obligated to discuss whether (and certainly why) they’re moving, building a house, or any number of other issues, even with friends. And if they don’t want to discuss it with friends, they don’t have to tell them why they don’t, either. Perhaps they were occupied with their own issues and problems and didn’t realize that others would expect to be kept informed. It doesn’t sound as if any offense was intended.

If people are truly your friends, I think they will tell you. In fact, I have no doubt that we’ll hear all about it when we see them next week.

No, I disagree. No matter how close of a friend you are, people are allowed to have privacy if they want it.

Did you miss the part where I said they are moving out of state?

They’ll get privacy all right. Maybe more than they counted on.

Perhaps you are a bit too interested in other folks business? It can make people uncomfortable. Maybe try backing off a bit?

If they didn’t tell you why they are moving, would it not be best to assume they had the opportunity to tell you but they chose not to? Perhaps you could simply congratulate them and wish them happiness in their new home.

I find it strange. If you know me well enough to send me your change of address info, you should know me well enough to mention it in conversation. If you were an acquaintance then of course it’s not expected…and nor would a change of address notice be.

Maybe they thought you wouldn’t care but would still like a current address? SOmetimes I want to tell someone something but correctly, in most instances, assume that people do not care. So I go online to a public forum instead. …Maybe they wanted to avoid any questions about why , etc… .Some people are very very private and you will never be really close with them. Even if you think you are bff forever they may think otherwise or see you as more of a going out/convinience friend.

That’s weird.
